Alright, who's hogging all the old bikes?

Postby khendar » Tue Feb 21, 2017 9:16 am

I've been out of the loop for ages. Last time I was riding regularly I was looking into picking up an old roadie and converting it to a single speed. I never ended up following through but I remember there being a ton of bikes and retro frames on ebay and gumtree going for <$100.

Today there seems to be nothing left. Ebay is full of "Progear" bollocks, Gumtree is either kids bikes or second hand Madones for $5000. Where have all the nice old steel frames gone ? Did the fixie scene eat them all up ?

Yeah, they were all whip skidded into oblivion.

There's plenty on Gumtree, you just have to dig deep. Somebody selling a half decent frame for <$100 typically doesn't know much about it so you need to trawl through hundreds of ads titled 'bike'.

I find ebay is a bit more focused on new stuff these days, but there are some bargains still to be had. There was a nice Raleigh up for grabs a little while back with some C-Record cranks sold for around $150.

That said, if people think their bike has even the slightest hint of value, the price seems to skyrocket.

That must have been at least 10 years ago, if not more.

The second hand market went nuts 8 or 9 years ago, and hasn't recovered.

A bare frame made from steel of any provenance (e.g. Columbus, Reynolds, etc.) will sell for at least $300, regardless of condition.

I dunno if the fixie craze had anything to do with it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I have a couple of good quality steel frames.
What size are you after?

My Merida is 54cm - so ideally something in that sort of range: 54-56cm.

Scarily enough, you seem to be right. Last time I was posting on the topic was back in 2008

Cheers for that. I'll check it out.

There's a place here in Adelaide called Bikes Workshop which builds and sells bikes for charity which used to always have alright stuff. I might go check them out again.

I worked for a large charity organization which had hundreds of donated old bikes in their storage.
The stock was always been replaced and then sent on to 3rd world countries.

As others have said. They come up but its often a famine and feast scenario. Not to mention the sizing lottery. No shortage of BSOs dressed up as bikes though.

Got an old Apollo Eclipse frame and fork in the shed you can have for shipping cost. Pretty sure the numbers work.

Alright I'm intrigued. Does it have single-speed compatible dropouts ? What's the shipping costs like from VIC to SA ?

Defiantly more than $50.

How much more ? I'm happy to pay for a known frame. My main worry is accidentally picking up some obscure Euro frame on Gumtree with a weird bottom bracket shell that I can't buy a replacement BB for.

I've just spotted this guy on ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sports-10-Sp ... Sw32lYoQTJ

I feel like if it goes for $10 it might be worth it just for spares even if the frame is no good. Cottered cranks are a let down but there might be a few useful bits on there.

See I reckon this Giant would be a good buy if the price stays low: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Giant-Red-Re ... 2128398327

Needs some love, but everything's there: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Retro-Blue-1 ... 2226367789

Another Giant for cheap: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bulli/bi ... 1137625747

Wathced 'Aussie Pickers' last night, there was a bloke in Toowoomba with a house absolutely full of old bikes. I suspect he's got all of them. All ages, shapes and sizes.

Eh, I couriered a frame and wheelset from Melbourne to Sydney for $25 using a courier company that starts with E and ends with Go. (No affiliation.) So don't write them off.

Anyway, they were just meant to be examples of what can be found.

Ahh cheers. Yeah there are a few around interstate but most of them wont ship to SA. Plus I'm hesitant to purchase sight unseen from interstate as there's no opportunity to check it out in person.

Howdy. I am still interested in your Eclipse frame. Would it be possible to get a few pics and measurements (Seat Tube/Top Tube) from it ?

No I didn't sorry. An early phone call had me out and about most of the day.
I'll have another go tomorrow

No shifter bosses, internal brake cable.
It's sized for 700c wheels, the headset feels good.
The fork looks to have forged dropouts but NO lawyers lips.
EDIT: The BB is garbage, it spins OK but the spindle is externally threaded

Sure ticks all the boxes. I was planning on replacing the bottom bracket with a modern unit anyway so that's no big deal. So long as its a sensible size/thread I shouldn't have any problems.

All that's really left is to get an idea how much shipping to SA will cost. Do any of those courier services have an online quote tool ?
