Fulcrum Racing 3 Wheelset ...
Postby Rural Rider » Wed Mar 01, 2017 10:32 pm
I've wanted to upgrade the bog stock wheelset on my Specialized Allez from the in house brand versions (Axis Classic) to something with a bit more life and pizzazz. The goal was to use the Axis rear wheel as my dedicated Indoor Trainer Wheel and buy something better for the bike on the road. I've settled on the Fulcrum Racing 3 Wheelset ... from the little research I've done they seem a good wheelset from Campy. Is anybody running a set of these? IHow do you like them? I got a bundle deal on the wheels and bought Conti GP4000 S II's to go with em.

I've only done a few thousand on my wheels but they have been great despite being treated generally like crap.
The only thing was one of the pawl's was not engaging from day one. Simple fix and every mechanic on the planet seem's to have spares. I honestly didn't notice until a fellow rider (who is a mechanic) commented that the freehub sounded quiet and we popped it open to have a look.
I had planned on using my standard wheels (Shimano) for wet weather but for some reason the spacing/placement of the cassette is every so slightly off so it's not a plug and play to swap from the F3's - hence the F3's are on all the time and just get a hose after rainy rides.
I didn't notice my average speeds being much higher with the F3's but I noticed that acceleration seemed snappier. This was noticeable when powering over the top of climbs. The climb is still slow, but they pick up speed nicely over the top.
I think they are a great value option.

Have any of you had to deal with servicing your Fulcrum hubs? I've seen a few grumbles about the interwebs from Fulcrum owners having trouble getting parts servicing for their wheelsets - are these hubs readily serviceable - what's your experience here?
BTW - Just found this brilliant bit of info on adjusting bearings in Fulcrum hubs!

No special tools required unless you want to replace the bearings.
I ride quattro's CX (4+ yrs commuting) and never really had to overhaul the hubs, sealed bearings.. The only time I needed to fix it was to replace the freehub which I got from bikebug, so I dont think there should be a problem getting fulcrum parts.

That's exactly what I thought too ... I knew that going in when I bought the Wheelset and could only guess at how they might look but the White hubs are even sexier than I first suspected! - Keeping them clean will be interestingedsa wrote:Looking good, the white hubs and black rims match the black/white color scheme of your bike perfectly

Except the Zondas are now 17 mm internal width v 15 on the Racing 3's.sir_camel wrote:Also keep in mind that the Campag Zondas are basically the same wheelset with a different spoke design. Often a little cheaper too.

3.5s are basically a hybrid of 5's hub & spokes with 3's rim.fat and old wrote:Put a new pair on last week. replaced 3.5's...whatever they are?.... I hope the brake track lasts longer than those. 20k and it split from wear.
they are often packaged as oem wheels for complete bikes shipped from factory.
i'm currently using a pair ..

Pretty sure the 2017 Fulcrum 3s are 17mm internal / 23mm external as well like the Zondas.madmacca wrote:Except the Zondas are now 17 mm internal width v 15 on the Racing 3's.sir_camel wrote:Also keep in mind that the Campag Zondas are basically the same wheelset with a different spoke design. That's what was explained to me previously. Except The 3's have 16 spokes front, the 3.5's 20....so different all round. Rear 3 has that triple spoke pattern with less, and def a diff hub. I only realised when I read thiscaneye wrote:3.5s are basically a hybrid of 5's hub & spokes with 3's rim.fat and old wrote:Put a new pair on last week. replaced 3.5's...whatever they are?.... I am very happy with these wheels as all rounders. Good for climbing, the flats, Happy to do it all.
Big tick for me !
