Entry level Mtb under A$1000

Postby Yass413 » Sun Mar 05, 2017 9:38 am

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my first decent Mtb under $1000 and I'm hoping if you can give me some advice.

I'm 168cm tall and have bigginer level experience with my friends bike before.
I'm looking at riding on weekend basis
on trail and at mountain bike park nearby.

I've been out for test ride couple times (I have tried Specialized rockhopper sport 29/ specialized Pitch Sports 650b/ Giant Talon 2 and 3/ Focus whistler 27R4.0.

I have about to decide to go with Giant Talon2 2017model $899 but
Just find polygon Xtrada6.0 online at A$749 rpp is A$1049.

I don't have much knowledge and experience but both of them looks having similar setting/parts. Polygon seems have some better parts and $150 cheaper than talon2.

Only concern is polygon is only selling online.

It would be really appreciated if you can give me some advice/ tips / or any other choices.

Cheers.

I'd pay the extra $150 for a Giant from a bike shop.
Talon is a nice reliable bike, pretty easy to ride, parts wise yes they are very similar. Nothing on the Polygon that is particularly wow.

Better with the bike shop, you can get the right size, at 168 you might fit a XS S or M, take them all for a test ride, we are all built different.

Also they should give you a free service, warranty, advice whatever. Peace of mind.
A bike from a shop is safely, assembled and tuned. With online you get a unassembled bike in a box.

There are a few other brands I have a Merida big 7, but you can't go wrong with Giant.

Sometimes buying a bike at a price range you can go nuts comparing all the specs, that are not going to make a big difference anyway. In the end, just got to get something half decent, get on the bike and ride.

Bicycles Online sell Polygon and have a retail store in Sydney (near Manly). They have one of the better returns policy for customers though if you live further away, you have to decide whether you are comfortable purchasing online. A local bike store with good staff is always a plus.

Can't provide advice in the bikes except to also consider which one is most appealing... beyond the specs, which dl you like the most?

I also vote for a bike from a local shop as your first bike. Then as your knowledge increases, you know more about what fits you, you can consider online with more confidence (and trust me, if the riding bug bites hard, you WILL start looking at upgraded bikes much sooner than you think.... :D

Buy something local and get out and have some fun.
