Where to buy a 26.5mm seat post?

Postby smugalugs » Sun Jul 16, 2017 1:24 am

I have purchased a 26" aluminium frame trike from http://www.trike-bike.com.au/. I was advised before purchase that I could buy a 'heavy duty' seat post to upgrade the weight capacity to suit my humongousness. I can't find locally or online anyone who stocks ANY seat posts in 26.5mm let alone something that could be considered heavy duty. Can anyone advise me on either a source or a solution to my dilemma. The seat is rated to 150kgs which falls far short and I therefore don't fancy risking a suddenly bent or broken post.

you sure it's 26.5,that's like a ye oldie size... thompson make a 26.6mm about as strong as you'll get...but at 26.6 wont fit.'chain reaction cycles have a Brank-X post at 26.4mm so you could use shims to make it fit, but if 150kg is a load issue, then that might not work either.

Although they don't sell direct to public, get onto Bicycle Parts Wholesale and find a shop local to you who deals with them. They have a huge range of seatposts in every size imagineable, plus many that were only imagined by a very few.....
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

That's the size they emailed me. I'll put a vernier caliper on it to be positive.

"...for all moderate use, it's an excellent seat post for the reasonable price...." Might not be strong enough.
"...26.0, 26.2, 26.4, 26.6, 26.8..." As with every site I've investigated the closest is 0.1mm either side. As mentioned in another post using shimms with a slightly smaller post might be workable.

Thanks. It seems I might be best just firing off emails to all the more popular online traders and ask for a solution with my specific needs. Someone might have a solution that isn't something I can search for.

also wasn't able to tell, does the post you have end in a integrated clamp and the underside of the seat have rails that are mounted onto that, or is it the sort where the seatpost is just a tube and then the seat mount clamps to the post and then the seat mounts on that? If the latter might be just finding any bit of pipe in the 26.5 diameter.

It's just a tube. Maybe I should be contacting some local engineering shops.

than this sort of post

because yeah, we'll all be reccomending the second type to the former and 99% of the ones you'll find online will be those.

This is the actual seat. Wouldn't it just be a matter of removing the top clamp as the rails are still there.

I used to have a billet alloy seatpost on my BMX bike that had a similiar saddle clamp arrangement as the one in your pic. It wasn't an actual bike seatpost, just a length of alloy the right diameter. Kept bending the regular hollow alloy seat posts.

^that is what i was getting at. Finding an actual 26.5mm post maybe impossible, but with that seat/clamp, you can probably get any old bit of metal made to fit.

OK. I have to apologise for wasting peoples time. Turns out whoever measured the seatpost at the supplier and emailed me can't use vernier calipers. The seatpost is stamped with 27.2 which of course makes everything much easier.

Thanks again for everyone trying to help me out with a problem that doesn't even exist. I should have unpacked the bike and checked myself however they sent me the wrong colour frame so I was tossing up sending it back. I'm going to keep it and assemble it as soon as I locate a decent seatpost. Maybe a Thompson as advised.

The good news is that 27.2 is a reasonably common size, so there wil be a few options out there.

Still, no fun in ending the discussion like that, so I would suggest you go and get the 26.6 mm seatpost you want together with a 26.6 to 27.2 shim and then report back.

I don't follow the purpose of using a shim when I can just buy the correct size post. I ordered a Thompson Elite 27.2mm x 330mm post from Wiggle for $80 after I checked the seat post stamped diameter and length myself. I'll certainly post the result when it arrives.

The supplier (office manager as the owner is away) rang me again after they had checked with their own supplier and suggested buying a steel tube that would fit inside the supplied post and metal glue it in for extra strength. I decided that wasn't a good idea as the step down in the post where the old fashioned seat clamp connects would become a weak point as it would be the point where the reinforcing ends.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

I think he was joking... the thread was starting to be a saga of epic post finding proportions...then you found it was incorrect info and just a regular psot size...an anti-climatic letdown and he suggested continuing the search for oddball sized post and seeing how many ways to come up with the size (shims to add, larger to lath down).
My suggesting is to send to Frank the Welder to repalce the seat tube with a larger one so you can put in a 31.8mm post, with photos; see that would be epic saga... (like this thread http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=197753)

! You spoke too soon.

The ongoing saga of the seat post... The rails are too wide apart. I'm going to have to find a way to clamp the seat rails in about 5mm each side without damaging the welds so I can attach the seat post in place of the old-school post clamp set-up. The way I'm going I'll be sitting on the bike by xmas. :|

If only it were that simple. Aside from all the money already spent on this project the seat is specialised. It has back support. This is what happens when you are old, broken down and out-sized. You end up unable to use off-the-shelf ... anything.

So what's the story with this saddle. Does it have non standard rail spacing?

Post some pictures of what you have got and perhaps someone can suggest something.
