That's the size they emailed me. I'll put a vernier caliper on it to be positive.mikgit wrote:you sure it's 26.5,that's like a ye oldie size...

"...for all moderate use, it's an excellent seat post for the reasonable price...." Might not be strong enough.
"...26.0, 26.2, 26.4, 26.6, 26.8..." As with every site I've investigated the closest is 0.1mm either side. As mentioned in another post using shimms with a slightly smaller post might be workable.

Thanks. It seems I might be best just firing off emails to all the more popular online traders and ask for a solution with my specific needs. Someone might have a solution that isn't something I can search for.Duck! wrote:Although they don't sell direct to public, get onto Bicycle Parts Wholesale and find a shop local to you who deals with them. They have a huge range of seatposts in every size imagineable, plus many that were only imagined by a very few.....

It's just a tube. Maybe I should be contacting some local engineering shops.mikgit wrote:also wasn't able to tell, does the post you have end in a integrated clamp and the underside of the seat have rails that are mounted onto that, or is it the sort where the seatpost is just a tube and then the seat mount clamps to the post and then the seat mounts on that? If the latter might be just finding any bit of pipe in the 26.5 diameter.

than this sort of post
because yeah, we'll all be reccomending the second type to the former and 99% of the ones you'll find online will be those.

I used to have a billet alloy seatpost on my BMX bike that had a similiar saddle clamp arrangement as the one in your pic. It wasn't an actual bike seatpost, just a length of alloy the right diameter. Kept bending the regular hollow alloy seat posts.smugalugs wrote: It's just a tube. Thanks again for everyone trying to help me out with a problem that doesn't even exist. I should have unpacked the bike and checked myself however they sent me the wrong colour frame so I was tossing up sending it back. I'm going to keep it and assemble it as soon as I locate a decent seatpost. Maybe a Thompson as advised.

I don't follow the purpose of using a shim when I can just buy the correct size post. I ordered a Thompson Elite 27.2mm x 330mm post from Wiggle for $80 after I checked the seat post stamped diameter and length myself. I'll certainly post the result when it arrives.baabaa wrote:Still, no fun in ending the discussion like that, so I would suggest you go and get the 26.6 mm seat post you want together with a 26.6 to 27.2 shim and then report back.
The supplier (office manager as the owner is away) rang me again after they had checked with their own supplier and suggested buying a steel tube that would fit inside the supplied post and metal glue it in for extra strength. I decided that wasn't a good idea as the step down in the post where the old fashioned seat clamp connects would become a weak point as it would be the point where the reinforcing ends.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

My suggesting is to send to Frank the Welder to repalce the seat tube with a larger one so you can put in a 31.8mm post, with photos; see that would be epic saga... (like this thread http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=197753)

The ongoing saga of the seat post... The rails are too wide apart. I'm going to have to find a way to clamp the seat rails in about 5mm each side without damaging the welds so I can attach the seat post in place of the old-school post clamp set-up. The way I'm going I'll be sitting on the bike by xmas.

If only it were that simple. Aside from all the money already spent on this project the seat is specialised. It has back support. This is what happens when you are old, broken down and out-sized. You end up unable to use off-the-shelf ... anything.mikgit wrote:buy a new seat

So what's the story with this saddle. Does it have non standard rail spacing?smugalugs wrote:If only it were that simple. Post some pictures of what you have got and perhaps someone can suggest something.
