What the Heck is a Grouppo (and Why Do I Care)?

Please note: this user's account has been removed as a probable spammer.

Out of all the words that get thrown around in bike shops, grouppo (the Italian word for “group”) smacks particularly of the kind of snobbery that people associate with bike shops. It’s really just a fancy word for a single collection of components from one manufacturer, also called a group set or, even more clearly, a component package. These include the shift/brake levers, chain, cassette, crankset, bottom bracket, and brake calipers, and as mentioned before, they are often sold in bulk as a package deal to bicycle manufacturers from component manufacturers to keep costs down.
Making things a little more complicated, each of the major component manufacturers has multiple tiers of these collections that you might be offered on any given bike. There are three to five levels for each manufacturer, but the one thing that all of them have in common is that as the price increases so does the quality, while at the same time they get lighter.
It’s good to get acquainted with the styles and terms because when you start looking at bicycles, their main differences are going to be in three areas: frame materials, wheel sets, and what group set they come outfitted with.
No matter what style of riding you’ll be doing, these options will remain fairly consistent across the board on both new and used bikes.

Beats me how a plain Italian word could be considered fancy or snobbish. I don't consider myself a snob when I order a cappuccino!

The Italian word for group is 'gruppo', not 'grouppo'... And since when is using Italian words snobby if they're in context?

Anyway, I always thought grouppo was just a contraction of groupset.

Hehe. Yes, amusing isn't when somebody tries to be a smart arse and instead just displays their own ignorance.

yeah I think OP missed the boat labeling this "snobbish"

although I did not know it was actually the Italian term, its a "group set" and it would be VERY common in in Australia to shorten that to groupo (or maybe groupy?).

Hmmm, come to think if it, perhaps he is right. When using "gruppo" it's assumed you're talking Campagnolo.
Calling your Shimano or Sram groupset a "grouppo" would indeed be snobbish.

Yes only Campag should be referred to as gruppo. Shimano should be グループ. ;)

If you think using grouppo is snobbish probably best to not use the dozens of other European centric terms in use today

I'd say this is a bot considering their only other post is also a new thread that sounds like a Buzzfeed list...

My thoughts exactly. I was going to reply earlier with "Cool story, Hansel" but it felt a bit too dickish if this was an actual person.

Proper aussie slang would be "groupo" with a single 'P', as us aussies like to end things in 'o' - servo, bottleo, etc

Anyway, what was the overall point of this thread .... :?:

Got it in one.

Then again, I like saying gabel and bremsen when I talk about parts to be really confusing and Euro and snobbish.

But then a derailleur would be a dero, and that's already taken...

I like Derailer for derailleur because I'm lazy. (then there is the depedals and dehandlebars he says in his best euro voice).

I remember I got smashed on this very forum for using gruppo/grouppo a while back. I'm still bitter and twisted about it to be honest and the two individuals have gone into the little black book never to be trusted again..... (you know who you are...)

Did anyone actually notice that the OP was just re-posting a magazine article which, in context, was probably answering a reasonable question from a hypothetical "newbie"?

I thought it was, for the intended audience, quite a good explanation of a common piece of cycling jargon, however you care to spell it.

:? Not that sure who the biggest snobs are here.... the language/spelling pedants, the the campagnoloscenti (I made that one up myself !! :D ) ....or the coffee 'merchant-bankers' ?

A grouppo is what you get when you mix Campagnolo with Shimano and/or SRAM: neither a gruppo nor a groupset, but a mismatched bastardisation that doesn't work as well as either of its constituent sources in their entirety.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

What gave it away?

If you have been paying attention, you'll probably draw the conclusion that the OP was just trying to draw traffic to his web site. I guess we've all clicked on the link now, so mission accomplished.

As for the article itself, I think it's possible to pass on information to beginners without the value judgements.

Not sure who you are directing your merchant banker remarks to, but right back at you mate!

Ah, well....I'm a bit naïve I guess, but I rarely click on links due to a few unfortunate past episodes with viruses, and didn't in this case - but the mag was listed in the link anyway.

I assume all special interest publications are full of value judgements, not to mention irony, humour and, hopefully, occasional self-deprecation.

hehe....not sure - or absolutely sure... ?
