Reviews on Reid CX and Reid Granite 2?

Hi all,

I am debating on whether I should get either the Reid CX or Reid Granite 2 as beginner budget cyclocross bikes. Thoughts/opinions?

Very cheap entry point, but couple things. The CX has a very cheap crankset and BB and these will be the first things to fail/deteriorate. The Granite has a much better crankset and BB. Is very cheap for what you get, but there are better bikes out there for slightly more money.

CX, very cheap, some parts reflect this.
Granite 2.0 still cheap, but less obviously so.

I'd sooner trust a Kona frame than a Reid.

Not the Reid CX purely based on the fact that the rear wheel uses a odd 130mm hub, whereas 99% of road disc wheel sets use 135mm hub. Makes finding new wheels for it really hard.

Granite 2 would be ok, provided the hub spacing is normal width.

If you get into the $1000 mark then it opens up a few others.

I found a second hand Kona Jake 2015 for 700, but the whole groupset looks a bit old/really dirty, so not sure if the performance is affected. Worth the 700? I can probably bargain it down a bit. It's a used bike so you'd need ot give it a ride and test to see if the groupset is worn or not. Its got the Tiagra 4600 from what the specs say, and this is regarded by some as a good low end groupset with good shifting

$700 for me though would be at the high end for a second hand bike like that.

Also, is the frame size suitable for you as that's a pretty big frame.

I just realised how big the frame is, as it is recommended that 59cm frames are for riders between 178 to 190 cm according to the Kona website. I, currently am standing at 175cm tall. Since I'm only 17, i thought I may somewhat grow into the bike as I only hit my growth spurt a year or 2 ago. However with the price, I can definitely try bargain it down. The right shifters, on the other hand, are a tiny bit scuffed which is my main concern.

Scuffing on the shifters wont matter unless its been knocked hard and dont work. Most second hand bikes will probably have marks just from wear and tear.

However, I think the bike it too large for you

I tested my brother's giant defy which is around 52 cm frame and it is too big. The seller did measure the top tube and it came out be 54cm. So i guess it's a no go. I may have to get the granite 2 due to its better components. Would you say it's worth the extra 120 dollars? I can get the granite 2 for $765.

I would have thought at your height, a 54-56cm frame would potentially fit, however it does depend on your build etc

The Reid CX and Granite are similar in specs however the Granite has the spyre calipers which are regarded as one of the best non hydraulic disc brakes.

If you can stretch your budget, look for something else, additionally if you can go without disc brakes then it open up some more options for you.

If that's the budget you have and you want a CX / disc brake bike, then apart from second hand (and not knowing what size you are) then you will probably wont get any better.

I probably will just get the Granite 2 due to the better components and the carbon fork. If later down the future, would it be worth to upgrade the groupset to a sora or tiagra?
