Looking for a good <$1000 used road bike

Postby allanchau » Sat Nov 11, 2017 12:18 pm

Hi,

I am looking to purchase a good <$1000 road bike for work and weekend riding.

I came across this on gumtree https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/warrada ... 1165035896 and was wondering if it is good value?
It is a 2011 model purchased in 2012 and barely used (I haven't actually seen it in person yet though).

Is there anything better out there in this price range?

Thanks,
Allan

Hard to tell from that one small photo, but white bar tape gets dirty really quickly. But probably not in "only 2 hours of use." And that bar tape looks a bit dirty to me. So that claim of low mileage may or may not be true.

Otherwise, they seem to be a well rated bike and $600 is pretty cheap. Assuming you can test ride it and know enough about bikes to see if the gears shift well and everything seems in good nick?

I think there are lots of genuine low mileage bikes on Gumtree, people love the look of a road bike then plonk their backside on it for one ride, hate it, and it goes into the spare room for 3 years until they admit they're never going to use it again :D

measuring the chain is one thing you can do the gauge how much its been used, providing its original of coarse which would be most bikes on the market .

personally the bike linked i find a little on the expensive side for a sora 2300 equipped bike, for example 2 blokes i work with recently bought sora 2300 bikes for $150 and $200 a piece.

Thanks for the help, I also had a look at https://www.reidcycles.com.au/vantage-e ... -disc.html and http://www.99bikes.com.au/merida-scultu ... black-2017 Both seem pretty decent for the price? Thinking of giving the Orbea a miss, I also noticed the front wheel seems to have a flat spot at the back?

In the used bike market, Giant is your friend, although I would recommend avoiding triple cranksets (so some OCRs, Defy and the occasional TCR will have these fitted). Saw a TCR in your area on Gumtree however it had a triple, so didn't recommend.

There's a Boardman CX bike on sale at Pushys which seems good value for money. $1000 for a disc-braked, alloy bike. https://www.pushys.com.au/boardman-perf ... green.html....only problem is size. Only S or XL left in stock.

Or, there's this Specialized Allez :

This is the Giant TCR I was talking about. Seems like a motivated seller...

As I mentioned before, it has a triple chainring, although if you stayed on the top 2 it's 52/42 (just like an old BioPace), then this isn't an issue. One thing though, he claims it has a new cassette, the cassette in the pics doesn't look new. Hard to tell from photos though. Has the ad marked Urgent, so I think if you went in at $450 cash he/she would probably jump at it. Is a 54cm frame, has Mavic wheels, well worth considering.
