Resurrecting a 2001 Trek 6700 Hardtail
Postby septuagenarian » Wed May 23, 2018 3:26 pm
First post, and as my name implies I'm an old fart, so please be gentle with me.
Been a cyclist all my life but getting down on the drops is now not my preferred way of riding so I passed on the you beaut Ultegra equipped road bike to a young fellow in the hope it may encourage to take up competitive cycling. Didn't happen.
This Trek will never be ridden in anger down a hill again, at least not with me on it. It will be my ride to the shops and the occasional potter along a dirt track.
OK, I've acquired a 2001 Trek 6700 Hardtail, in pretty good nick except for the bits that were wrecked when it was thrown down a hill.
It is Deore 3 x 8 speed equipped so bottom spec for the Alpha ZX frame.
Up front the ST-EF29-L shifter combos work well and will be retained even if I decide to change the cassette to a 9 speed.
The chainset is the original Bontrager Comp and the arms seem OK but the outer chainwheel is at least 10mm out of alignment and the middle ring about 3mm. I'm guessing that the chain got hooked up and did the damage on the way off, also demolishing the rear mech in the process.
After looking at replacement chainrings it became obvious that it was cheaper to replace the whole unit. Being a cash strapped OAP I thought do I really need a triple chainring set-up for my uses?? A double has to be cheaper, right?
So my proposed set-up is :
- Current 3 x 8 speed shifter combo
- New bottom bracket, probably a BB-52
- New 2 x 9/10 chainset
- Newly fitted Shimano RD-M4000 SGS Alivio Shadow 9 speed Rear Derailleur Long Cage ????
- New YBN chain
- Possible FD replacement as I don't feel it came out unscathed.
Questions
- Suggestions on tooth count for the 2 x 9 chainset
- Will my 11-32T 8 speed cassette be OK or should I look at different gearings
- Will I have problems with the long RD-M4000 cage derailleur
I thought I could just replace the 22-32-42T crankset but they are like rocking horse poo for the old square taper bottom bracket.
Please don't assume that I'm knowledgeable about bikes because all that I've regurgitated here I've got from Mr Google in the last week or so.
Any help most appreciated.

This is the cheapest & easiest way - they are around if somewhat hidden, eg Pushys have Your rd-m4000 derailleur will be fineseptuagenarian wrote:I thought I could just replace the 22-32-42T crankset but they are like rocking horse poo for the old square taper bottom bracket.

I decided to stop stuffing around and grabbed an Alivio FC-M4050 22-32-40T at a reasonable price and a SM-BB52 bottom bracket.

If you change to a 9-sp. cassette you must also change the shifters to suit. 8- and 9-sp. cassettes are the same overall width; to fit the 9th sprocket in they all get packed closer together, with the result that the indexing points in the shifter will only align with the two extreme gears, and none of the seven in between (plus the shifter will be one gear point short).septuagenarian wrote:

I wondered about that and thought that I could set it up to only lose the big cog.
I need to be careful that I don't try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I've abandoned the cheap 'n' cheerful route and gone looking for older but better parts, and have now accumulated the following:
- Shimano XTR FD-M970 Front Derailleur
- Shimano Deore XT RD-M786 10-Speed Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur
- Shimano Deore LX ST-T660 3x9 Speed F&R Shifter/ Brake Lever set
and I suspect I may have painted myself into the compatibility corner.
The elephant in the room seems to be the rear mech.
Will the 9 speed LX ST-T660 shifters play happily with the 10 speed Deore XT RD-M786 and will they both behave with a new 9 speed cassette and what chain should I get now ?

I've contacted the seller and asked them to swap the RD-M786 for a 9 Speed RD-M771 (they don't have a M772).
I'm spending a bit more than I intended to but coming from an Ultegra equipped road bike I just wasn't all that happy with the quality of the Alivio bits I was thinking of using.

- Shimano Deore LX ST-T660 3x9 Speed F&R Shifter/ Brake Lever set
- Shimano XTR FD-M970 Front Derailleur
- Shimano Deore FC-M590 MTB Crank Set 9 Speed 175mm 44/32/22T Black
- Shimano XT M771 9 Speed Rear Derailleur
I'd decided on an Alivio crankset but then realised that the tooth gap between Top and Middle was wrong so found a FC-M590 with the right number (12). Better gear anyway, I think.
As I said above, this thing has some battle scars, but I think with the gear I'm putting on it, it should be a very enjoyable ride for this old fart.

Only bit I'm not real happy with is the crankset but the price on an appropriate XT was ridiculous.
Will post some pics when it all arrives and is fitted.

Just need to work out what adapter I need for the rear and source a reasonably priced wheelset.
And had a chat to my spray painter mate about a nice shiny black paint job.
PS: Found the adapter on the Trek site.
PPS: Maybe these wheels ??? Never heard of them but the price is OK
