Word on the street (LBS) is Shimano will not allow shipping to Australia from overseas from 1 January 2019.

May be best to get your online purchases before then.

Well, it's getting to the point where I'll just wear out my bikes until they're completely dead and then give up on cycling.

I'm sick of hearing about the 'global economy' when it seems the only purpose it serves is to lower wages (god forbid Aussies who pay the highest prices for stuff like electricity in the world get paid more than workers in other countries who work for a bowl of rice a day and penalty rates for hospitality workers are obviously the work of the devil ) but at the same time be subjected to what I consider to be illegal trade restrictions within this 'global economy' in order to push prices up. I've thought this way since the region coding of DVD's so it's not just cycling. I'm just fed up. I'll just walk everywhere for now on. At least I can buy $2.50 thongs at BigW. They'll screw up my feet big time but I'll just let Medicare fund the fix for that or end up crippled on a disability pension.

Interesting to see what will happen to parallel importers such as Cycling Deal.
They have warehouses in Taiwan and the U.S. and here in Oz. They move stock freely between these warehouses.

There are a few other suppliers who tried to do the same. Mavic for one. Probably because an Australian importer/distributor objected.

Not the end of the world if the supply lines are maintained (i.e. Pushys/bikebug still stock) but unlikely after srams experience where everything got expensive overnight. Cyclingdeal is the only hope lol, either thta or we all go microshift.

I had a look this week for Shimano MTB brake pad replacements and definitely, in spite of the current value of the Aussie dollar, the current prices at Bikebug/Pushys are level if not lower than the usual UK suspects. The cynic in me doubts whether this situation will continue should the Australian Shimano distributor get their way. Watch the Aussie Shimano prices soar!!

The interesting thing is that in Australia, Shimano Japan has major stakes in the local Shimano Australia and to date the approach was that the purchase location doesn't matter - warranty / servicing is still accepted. Technically Shimano Australia don't record a sale that is overseas but as they are part of the parent organisation, the location of the retailer was not defined as a disadvantage.

SRAM have long held this approach and I feel this has reduced their market penetration.

And then there are the online overseas retailers who get very 'tricksy'.. the nature of the Shimano international setup would make this difficult to control.
