Is a KHS Choper a Raleigh Chopper?

Postby marc2131 » Sun Apr 27, 2014 3:43 pm

A Victorian based seller has this KHS Choper for sale. I suspect he expects about $700.
However he is advertising it as a Raleigh Chopper. Wrote to him about it but he claims that KHS did produce Raleighs.
Ebay item no. is 32138 7854297.

My money is on a KHS knock off; copying of the sticker font, but a deliberate mispelling of "Chopper". If they made them for Raleigh, why wouldn't they be branded as Raleigh?

Anyway, certainly looks the right period. Still a bit rich for $700 in that nick.

That front rim looks like it could do with the delicate touch of some alfoil & vinegar. Looks like it's been sitting in a puddle for the last 35 years.

I was a Raleigh Chopper nut back in the day, and distinctly remember several variants of 'Coopers' and 'Chopers' etc. They usually sold for about 30 to 40% less than the actual Raleigh Chopper.

Nope, Raleigh Choppers were made by Raleigh, i can't find anything that says KHS ever made any bikes for Raleigh. I have a feeling current Raleigh bikes are made by Merida (which would be a pretty safe bet).

Ergo; seller is having a lend.

caveat emptor, as always. Whether the seller is genuine or not.

Good to report the seller to ebay. I told him and he gave me some lame excuse about it being a 'Raleigh'.

Thankfully this seller "we.sell2you" was not able to off-load this fake 'Chopper' the first time around.
He's at it again though.
