How to train while working away without access to bike?

Postby bronto13 » Wed Feb 14, 2018 8:58 pm

Hi everyone,

I have just got back on the bike after 25 years off. I have been training for the last couple of months but go to work at the end of the week. I work away for up to a month at a time and sometimes there if no gym with an excercise bike. What would you recommend I do while away so that I don’t lose the miles I have done so far.

Thanks in advanced.

1. Take a bike with you and if the local roads aren't suitable then also take a trainer.
2. Running is about the closest approximation to cycling but not suitable for everyone. For me powering up hills brings my running technique closer to a cycling technique but that may not be the case for you.
3. Anything is better than nothing. Where there is no gym sometimes there might be a Yoga class, a walking group, whatever
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

Lie on your back and spin your legs in the air?
Sorry. :D

This.
Unless you can find a bike or a gym with a spin bike - you are cooked. Nothing else is gonna do anything for you.

Two bikes.

One there, one here. The there bike doesn't need to be the sexiest bike ever or anything exotic, can be a refurbed 80s Apollo or Repco with reliable 2x7 Exage and bomb-proof tyres that you park up in a locked cupboard or something until you go back, pump up the tyres and off you go. Less than $300 would set you up easily.

Technically, I think this is referred to as Velogamy (?)
Campagnolo for show, SunTour for go

Are you FIFO? Makes the 2nd bike almost impossible with a 6 kg carry on limit....unless you take it up a bit at a time.
i used to use a skipping rope and light weights. Aim for very high intensity rather than x amount of weight. Like Cassius used to say " i don't start counting until it hurts".
My bicycle riding back in the mines was only to keep to fit for moto racing and did not seem to suffer too much from lack of kays when i did this.
