Aero top road alum. handlebars?

Postby familyguy » Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:16 pm

Does anyone still make an aero/flat top road bar in aluminium? Plenty of carbon around, but seems to be either more than hte bike is worth or unconvincing Taiwanese makes. Weight is not an issue, comfort is.

Something like this in aluminium would be nice:

My experience :- If you are a comfort seeker like my hands / wrists are with their 15+ breaks and associated fractures then you want carbon.

I've tried plenty of wing/aero bars FSA, Oval, Cinelli and a couple of the knock off models. My current Zipp SL70 bars are the best so far, heaps of material inside them to absorb heaps of vibration. I'm not a WW either so more material/weight is my thing.

I'm yet to ride a bike fitted with an alloy bar (and I've tried plenty of these too) that doesn't numb some part of my hands/wrists after half an hour of grip time.
3rd class cycling is always better than 1st class walking

I’ve been looking at the same thing, but would also prefer carbon.

The Zipp SL70 are indeed nice, but at over $400, waaaaay outta my budget.

Closest that I think I could afford are the Easton EC70 at $199 (255g). The EC90 are a bit more exxy ($249 and 230g) and lighter, but the EC70 are probably the ones that I’ll try.

Or you could try the Chinese knockoffs at about $80 or so, but think my life is worth a bit more ....

The 3T Aeronova are also a bit exxy and the alloy ones are heavy, but maybe an option.

How many stories have you heard about bars breaking in normal use? I haven't even heard of any that have broken as the result of a crash, and whilst that may say more about my limited social circles, I'm sure that it would be newsworthy.

Whilst I'm sure that the knockoffs are going to be heavier than genuine bars, they may even be flexier than genuine bars, I doubt that they would actually be unsafe in use.

Cheers,

Cameron.

Deda are measured outside to outside. So 42cm is equivalent to 40 c-c

Worth checking what their 40 cm model is here

Some good options, thanks. Superzero look OK, now to save a little and figure out what bike I want them on. Only got 1" quill bikes running at the moment!

One other option was the Ritchey Streem (someone else had them here), but for me, the Classic bend doesn't work.

I currently have the 3T Ergonova, but these aren't made anymore, so are not readily available. The Aeronova from 3T was one that I was looking at, byt the transition from the flats to the hoods wasn't great for the position I sometimes ride in, so they were out as well.

For me at the moment, the Easton EC70/90's are the ones that provide the best blend of drop shape, price and flat top for me.

Still thinking though.

WCS Streem II seems to have more of a semi-ergo bend. I do like the Ritchey stuff, have a couple of their WCS road bars.

Don't like that semi-ergo bend. Doesn't fit for me, just like them Campagnolo thumb shifters.

So, familyguy, did you get anything ?

I ended up getting a set of EC90 copies from ebay (using some key suggestions from other forums), and the seller was good. I wanted a different seatpost to the one offered in the set, and he worked it out for me, with no issues.
Part of the decision to go with the copy, was there was none available in the size I wanted (EC90), nor were any of the other alternates within my budget or size, so invested my World Cup sweep winnings + a bit more :-)
Will be interesting to compare what they look like when it gets here.

I haven't as yet, no. I'm midway through about a dozen things, but it will be bike building next month to replace a couple of things. Might email you for the EC listing, they look quite good. Failing getting some Ritchey.
