At the lane just before the punchbowl rd-burwood rd intersection at Belfield, there were tww cars facing each other in a one lane wide lane with parked cars on the side. Imagine getting out from that in peak hours at Punchbowl road.

So this afternoon I commuted to lab. Saw a cargo ebike just outside Petersham station, seems like its not locked and the battery not taken out. People do need to take care sometimes. And also on the same commute, saw a police car behind a car that seems stopped in stanmore, And didin't think too much about it, until I came to the office and my friend started talking about shooting in the forest Lodge area (sydney) that left one man dead

Commuting to the weekend ride from, Lakemba-North Sydney, thought it would be around 1 h, but the CBD really slows you down after going through central.
Weekend ride, so many problems, someone had a flat tire, someone didin't call a speed bump so someone fell, crashed, enough to turn the handlebars, then someones cleat broke on an uphill and broke his collarbone so an ambulance was called.
Now I know how hard it is to be a ride leader, especially if somehow everything seems going wrong.
Also, I reckon we could be more in zigzag formations rather than the straight line formation, so you can see what's ahead, have a safety margin, but still quite close to each other. because in a straight line, you can only see the back of friend,
Back from the ride, I took a train, then did Hurstville to Lakemba (it's amazingly close from the map, and amazingly far if you take public transport). but then blew my tire when I rolled though a rock. took ages to take out the tube as I put it between some sticky plastic tape (that made it more puncture resistant, but a nightmare to change tube), finally got it out using the help from my legs. then changed the inner tube
if it can go wrong, it could go wrong, just be prepared.

A BUG at Sydney, wouldn't name it, but just as an example that in a group ride, accidents and crashes do happen, sometimes it is a fault, sometimes it's just bad luck. and the leader did deal with these events so in the end it was all good.biker jk wrote:Which group organised the ride?opik_bidin wrote:Dunno where to put this, so lets put it here,

We know there are groups that just leave their mates behind and or just push their injured friends to keep going

Took a punt given the weather forecast and made it into work without much troubles. Alas the return journey I had to skip as here in Hong Kong it was amber rain storm warnings.
Today was my second attempt and the weather is still crappy - drizzly and wettish roads but taking a punt again and determined to ride it home - rain or not.
Ride time is about 35 min, 9km, about 150m vert elevation. Using the public sports ground cold showers. Thinking come winter that won't be very pleasant.

Yes it is quite warm for most of the year. There is about a 2 month window where it gets cold - perhaps down to about 6-8 degrees celsius.jasonc wrote:doesn't HK have more of a tropical climate? i.e. winter would be still be ok temps?BugsBunny wrote: Thinking come winter that won't be very pleasant.

I think I give away now than I use. I hope it keeps the puncture fairy away.Cyclophiliac wrote:I gave a spare tube to another commuter who had a flat on my ride home yesterday, the first time I've been able to do that in ages. I was given one some years back, and appreciated it.

Got myself all setup and started down the same route I took on the way in and every thing looked *different*. Almost at if it didn't seem like the right way home! I think that's mainly due to the heavily congested roads. Anyways, I decided to avoid as far as possible the main roads so ended up riding on the pavement (which is illegal here) for part of the journey.
Rode into office again today so will see if things improve with experience.

My take is, keep taking the lane, rather than going nearer the kerb, as it invites close passing of impatient drivers

The weather was astounding. Hailed on traveling to work, hailed on traveling home. Massive cross winds along the beach from Albert Park to StKilda on the way home. Freeing cold, rain, hail and huge winds. I think these are the worst conditions I have ridden in. Managed to survive and I think this is the first time I have ridden to or from work and not seen another cyclist, on the way home tonight I did not see one other person on a bike. Amazing but the weather was clearly the explanation. Nice to be back home where it is warm.

I won't ride in hail. Hurts too much. I'll stop under something and wait it out. Same as lightning. When it gets too close, I'll wait it outkb wrote:One of my more memorable commutes I heard a strange noise sweeping along.. not a plane surely? Turned out to be golfball sized hail.
