I think the whole thing was sparked off by the fact that the jasonc wasn't riding in the cycle lane. Red flag to a bull for an avid Courier Mail reader. The motorist incensed by seeing this thought it be best to teach the cyclist a lesson.

Sorry which bike lane is that?! People get so mad and self righteous they lose the ability to even observe basic facts on the ground...

Hard to see in the video but after about the 50 second mark there is a bi directional cycle lane on the right. I'll use the cycle lane as a courtesy to others if I am holding up traffic but in this case I wasn't impacted the driver in any way, he was just being an anti-cycling moron.

Ironically when I did cross over to the cycle lane later it was blocked. Understand they have to trim the trees but during peak hour?

So I have been upsetting lots of people this week on the roads.

In this situation a bus driver got upset because I slowly approached a set of red lights (yes I'm still getting used to the spd-sl change over) :P

you hear about some people with PhDs in astro physics who prefer to work in jobs with lesser demands on qualifications and specialist skills. I don't think he's one of them

I have always found lodging a formal complaint to Sydney buses to be useful - it gives them a reason to review the footage from inside the bus which is unlikely to help the driver

Report him to police for going forward from a left turn only lane.

It boggles the mind it really does. So many people treat driving as a race to each red light. I've probably received as much abuse and expressions of anger and annoyance for this while driving as while cycling.

It is a red light ahead, what is the rush?

Had a car swerve into my lane and out yesterday (Im driving), get up beside and he's got his note book out across the steering wheel writing. At a guess about a late 60yr old. Give him a beep and try to give my thoughts at the lights, but he pulls up short and then turns left. Would of easily cleaned up a bike rider.

Yeah might do that, I'm sure I'm not the first cyclist he has blasted with his horn.

I'm struggling to see any issue that required a blasting of the horn, did anyone pick up a reason, regardless of how pathetic it might be

i.e. stopped pedalling and he wasn't paying attention, probably.

Had a good convo with a bus driver at a stop last week. He is the union rep or something, so he has to look at every reported incident and sit in on interviews. He said many of the new drivers get 2 months of training, if that, in a bus before they're let loose and that try to drive them like a car. No wonder they're having sideswipe and kerb strike incidents like crazy.

I nearly wore a truck as a hat today - I was doing around 50k when he looked straight at me, & then proceeded to drive straight out in front of me. I managed to stop but it was a close thing

You'd think 2 months full time training would be plenty, especially for someone who already has an ordinary drivers' license.

Ok, I'm going to cut the driver some slack on this one. He passed you safely and it wasn't really an overt MGIF or anything (though of course he did slow you a bit on the speed humps at 0:40).

However, what you did at 0:40 to 0:46 was aggressive in my opinion, the way you squeezed him there on the left just after the speed humps. The reason that he was so slow to get back up to speed is that he was trying not to hit you, and it actually forced him slightly over the double white lines. Honestly, if a car tried to squeeze my like that on my bike I'd be pretty upset.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the incident where the road narrowed (see link) at 0:40 to 0:46 is what got the driver annoyed. And then he just lashed out with something stupid when you past him.

No issue with the overtake or the speed he was driving.

It's possible he thought I was going pass him on the inside and hence his tantrum. It may have looked like this from his perspective as I moved to the left but this was only to avoid the speed bump, I would never try and buzz past on the inside. Not sure about the squeeze and forcing him over the double lines as I stayed behind him the whole time.

I think that his "tantrum" was triggered by concern for your wellbeing ..... in his mirrors you would be disappearing and re-appearing, one second well back the next second up close.

Just because you know what you are going to do does not mean he does. He doesn't know if you are going to try slip up his left side (as it appears you may at one stage) or quite where you are ....... he was probably looking from mirror to mirror wondering where you were and if you were going to do something silly whilst he is still trying to concentrate on the traffic and the road in front.

He cannot assume that you are smart enough to stay back because if you aren't and he misses you doing something silly, like slipping up his left side, he may accidentally hit you. He would not worry about a car in the same place as you as it would not fit down the side of him and also if something did happen with a car it would probably not result in injury, only a few bent panels whereas to hit you may be fatal.

Consider drivers ...... don't ride within one metre of their vehicles ..... that is a close pass ........... :D ....... where that leaves those who love filtering, I don't know ....... :D :D

Looking at the video again the clue is when you are right up close to him on the curve when he brakes ..... he stays on or over the wrong side double lines far longer than necessary until he is well clear of you ....... I am guessing he was expecting you to come up on his left.

I'm a bit of a sceptic so I'm not sure I could agree with you on this. The response from him and the way it was delivered didn't really feel like it was coming from a place of concern.

I hope I'm wrong and you are right as I would much prefer to have safe considerate drivers out there rather than screaming lunatics :D

I had one of the worst I've had on Friday.

Going into a roundabout, I'm on a car's right, I'm in the roundabout before they are, they slow, and then sail through the roundabout. Didn't look, didn't care? I have no idea. I had to slam on the brakes and swerve, although that was difficult given they were cutting close to the middle, no room there.

I wish I had time to think to slam a dent in their car, but too busy avoiding getting hit. Almost chased after them but thought it pointless in the end. Was stopped, gobsmacked, in the middle of the roundabout for a while, then went on my way.

Sorry AF,
I reckon you have misinterpreted the close passing law. And you seem to know why.
I mean a two ton vehicle must not come close to a cyclist so it doesn't hit the cyclist. It is a totally different scenario for a cyclist to come close to a vehicle.
Consider that when a vehicle comes at you it is taking your space and may cause you to take evasive action. Where as a cyclist is in evasive mode whilst riding near a vehicle.
Two totally different situations. :)

The close pass rule would only apply to a cyclist when he passes a pedestrian in a like for like situation. Though I don't think it is spelled out in the law. Not in Vic any way.

https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au ... .html#faq1
The minimum passing distance rule only applies to drivers of a motor vehicle. However, an advisory passing distance applies to bicycle riders passing pedestrians. This is a safety advisory recommendation only, not a road rule change.
