Hi All,
I am going to buy a second hand bike rack for my two bikes. Rack will fit to the rear spare wheel on my 4x4 (Defender) or, if I have to, I'll get a tow hitch mount although this isn't preferred. I don't want to put the bikes on the roof as the car is too high as it is (not for loading bikes but for hitting overhead objects) and I don't want to put the bikes in the back unless its a one day trip.
The two bikes are 1) Canyon Inflite CX Bike and 2) Pivot Mach 429: http://www.bikemojo.com/speak/16-bikes- ... edium.html . The Canyon will be a doddle to fit but I'm not sure the Pivot will be able to be clamped onto the rack due to the rear suspension setup. Rack will be something like the following;

There's always a weird origami involved putting duallies on a rear rack. Personally with four duallies in my family from L to XS sized frames, it's just trial & error.
I use a Saris Bones RS which I've reviewed here and love. Not so long ago some knob reversed into the bikes and managed to crack one of the clamp retainers. Saris US sent one in the post along with apologies! Happily though all the bikes were fine.
And I don't like top-tube adapters. They look OK, but the bikes bounce around so much the seatpole & headset get damaged - especially if they are muddy.

If you go the Hitch mount, it gives more more flexibility. Check out the Isi carrier, which is specially designed for 4x44xsama wrote:Hi All,

The bikes sit level on the platform, avoiding all the issues with hanging bikes off the carrier and having them dangle at all sort of weird angles. The iSi carrier also gives you access to the rear of the car without removing the bikes.

The Saris model you might like is: https://www.saris.com/product/freedom-superclamp-stValleyForge wrote:I use a Saris Bones RS which I've reviewed here and love. I gave the exact same advice to someone asking for a lift, with the same suspension design on his bike. Buy an adapter bar, then anyone with any rack can give you a lift.

I gave mine away - was far from satisfactory compared mounting to the rack. The bigger frames fit normally, the M frame duallie fits inside the rear seat stay, and my youngest's XS duallie sits with the down tube on top and through the rear seat stay. It's all trial and error.Mububban wrote:Buy an adapter bar, then anyone with any rack can give you a lift.
Probably will load up this weekend - will take a photo.
