Bike touring frame

I’m wanting to bike my first bike touring rig and am either looking at a hard rail mountain bike or a fat bike. Does anyone have suggestions on specific frames that maybe suitable for me to start my project. I would not want to spend more than $500 on a frame or even a complete bike that I can then alter. Has anyone got any suggestions for this newbie?

Any quality, no-suspension old school MTB would build up well too. There's now lots of tyre choices that weren't there a few years ago.

It'll help if you're a bit clearer about what sort of touring your're going to do - 600km brevets vs trans-siberian treks, on-road vs single track

You could get a complete 5/6/7+ year old Vivente or Surly for $500, might not be in pristine condition but the frame would be good and many of the components would be adequate for starting. Another to look out for is a Cannondale Touring, aluminium rather than steel but robust enough, all will take wider tyres, the Vivente would be the best value if it came with all the original extras, lights, Dynamo hub, mudguards, rack etc
