Pommie Scrounger
Postby pottssteve » Tue Aug 27, 2019 9:03 pm
I have joined the forum as I am on the scrounge. I currently live in Hong Kong (I know, don't ask), and will be visiting a friend in Canberra in December.
I would like to hire a road bike for some short rides aound Canberra, up Black Mountain etc, but the idea of paying AU$100 a day is somewhat off-putting.
I am therefore writing to ask whether anyone knows where I can hire a road bike at reasonable cost, or if anyone can loan me one for a couple of weeks. I would be looking for something with a 58cm frame, I can bring pedals etc. Doesn't have to be Tour quality, just something to trundle around on. Obviously I would take great care of it.
If I manage to get kitted out it would be great to join any Canberra riders for a few loops - I am a 50 year old male, keen but not super-fit.
Please get in touch if you would like to help.
Many thanks,
Steve

Apologies for any offence caused; I work with a lot of Aussies and it's just part of the banter, hence the Pommie Scrounger reference.P!N20 wrote:Not a great start.pottssteve wrote:Kia Ora, Australians!
Happy to go with, "G'day" if you prefer...

Just to clarify, I can tell the difference between Australians and New Zealanders - Aussies are the ones with the corks on their hats, I believe.
Anyway, can anyone loan me a bike?
Cheers,
Steve

Kiwis (men) have a deep and affectionate love for their sheep.pottssteve wrote:ust to clarify, I can tell the difference between Australians and New Zealanders - Aussies are the ones with the corks on their hats, I believe.
The top selling aftershave in New Zealand is mint sauce.
Pet sheep in kiwi back yards are known as ride-on mowers.
Aussies love dogs and beer.

Sorry, no spare bike, but I do know a lovely looking ewe named Doris.pottssteve wrote:All useful information, this, although nobody has said they can loan me a bike yet.
She rides pretty well too.

Thanks for the offer, Tim. I assume that you speak from experience?Tim wrote:Sorry, no spare bike, but I do know a lovely looking ewe named Doris.pottssteve wrote:All useful information, this, although nobody has said they can loan me a bike yet.

Just to clarify again, I am English so the sheep are safe. The only ride I am looking for is a bike.

Kiwis can be bogans, to be precise. Particularly those from Upper Hutt.pottssteve wrote:Just to clarify, can bogans be Kiwis or is this only Australians?

Jeez, that's quite a specific request, would you want to take photos?piledhigher wrote:Just to clarify, if I lend you a bike will you ride it in a kilt?pottssteve wrote:All useful information, this, although nobody has said they can loan me a bike yet.
Being English I don't own a kilt, though one of my Aussie colleagues has one as his family were deported from Scotland for some misdemeanour or other. Back in 1993, I think.
I would most likely be in lycra, however, I am not in great shape at the moment so resemble a badly stuffed draught excluder. Does that float your boat?
The search continues, I think....
