Ive been offered a track bike ( its Christmas again). No decals but a ' C' on the top of the headset.
Not much to go on I know. The seat has an Italian name. Pick up tomorrow and more saddle details then.
Does the C give any clues?

What are we talking - vintage steel? Alu? Carbon fibre? Quill stem or threadless headset?

Thin steel.

Track bikes can be hard to identify properly... They're a lot simpler than roadies, and therefore have fewer obvious means of identification.

But, you can easily work out if it's a quality unit by looking at the following:
- Branded rear ends,
- Seat post size,
- Bare frame weight,
- The good old "rings like a bell" test

Only have to smuggle it in now.

Leave it in the boot of the car, then slip into the garage after she falls asleep on the couch... hope that the kids don't spring you and call out "where are you going Dad?"

Ah! Picked it up and it is not a genuine track bike. Roadie that has been altered to race on the track. Right size for me and luckily has the holes for a brake.
Brought home in car. Waited for the right moment. Took it down to the shed , turned around and heard,
' Who owns that bike?'
Sprung!

It has a 53 tooth chainring, so some alterations may have to be made.
