New Passing Distance Law

Postby wongaga » Fri Jun 04, 2021 5:45 pm

The new law requires cars to give us 1 metre of space on roads up to 60kmh, and 1.5 metre above that.

On my recent rides, a surprising number of cars seem to be actually doing this. Is it due to the new law, or are they all just chilled due to the lockdown? What have others experienced?

Cheers, Graeme

Mixed bag. Have noticed some drivers intentionally giving me a bit of space, others though probably aren't even aware of the new law.

I wasn't expecting much due to reports from the other States of little if any change.
I have however been pleasantly surprised at the local response from drivers, even the dual cab ute brigade. Wide, and I mean really wide, other side of the road, safe, legal overtaking on the whole.
It might just be that I'm in country Vic with a slightly more relaxed driver attitude but I have had many, many encounters in the past with neanderthal, psychopathically deranged morons.
Having said that tomorrow I'll snap back out of this parallel universe to the one of old.
It's too good to be true. :D

I've also noticed an improvement, even on the Nepean Hwy through Edithvale/Chelsea/Bonbeach where it goes to one lane.

It feels like there hasn't been as many close passes.

Hopefully it continues.

Also noticed much more frequently drivers slowing and patiently waiting (all of 3 seconds) behind until it's safe to overtake. Hard to believe, but there's been a notable improvement.
I'm waving to the good ones too.
I don't watch TV but wonder has there been a media campaign?

Cheers. I hadn't noted any media campaign.
I struggle to watch or listen to any commercial media as the adds drive me away.
That'll be why I guess.

In QLD my experience was the careful people of the world got even carefull(er), and then the not very nice people started treating it as a game once they realised their chances of being actually penalised were stuff all.

Having said that I certainly hope it keeps up for you!

Keep up with the thank-you waves people, you might just nudge the odd driver into a more cyclist-friendly space.
