Roadie Ride in Melbourne - About 50 - 60km

Hi All,

I'm looking for a ride to do after 'work' that is around 50-60km. I'll be heading off from Northcote.

I have been doing the Main Yarra Trail into the CBD as well as toward Eltham. At the moment its so busy and slow. Its also pretty hard to maintain an effort when its not congested. I've done a few rounds of the boulevard between Kew and Alphington too but its a bit boring.

Any suggestions for a good loop on a roadie?

Unfortunately I rekon it's going to be mostly congestion at least until 5-10km out. You could swing east and loop around park Orchards and south Warrandyte. Plenty of hills, minimal traffic and some good climbing.

You could peel off the Eastern fwy trail at elgar rd and take springfield rd (It's very bike friendly) which is where you you start to get into a rhythm. Keep going all the way to the end and then connect to quarry road route something to get your through park orchard and warradyte south. Then coming back inbound I would probably try Reynolds road. Should be 50-60km depending on route. You will have to grind through until you get to elgar road but after that should be very little congestion.

You're not too far from Mt Pleasant Rd, can always link that up to Warrandyte/Kangaroo Flat areas for a few extra km.

I've noticed quite a few bikes on Beverly Rd, Banyule lately. Any idea what loops in with that?

Hi: If your start point is Northcote, have you considered trying the Darebin Creek Trail? You can pick it up from Darebin Road at Grange Road, go as far north west as the Metropolitan / Western Ring Road, and pick up the path beside that if you want to go further.

Signage isn't always great so you can easily end up in some undiscovered territory....But parts of the path go through some quite lovely parks and bush, and for most of the time you are well away from vehicle traffic.

Have you ridden the Capital City Trail? It's a 29km loop that is reasonably clear after hours.

One way to add kms is to head west through Parkville, along CityLink to the Docklands. You can then head to Port Melbourne either via Lorimer St or via the trail along the tram line.

Hit Beach Rd and add some more kms.

Every time I've ridden that route I've had no dramas carrying a high speed.

Depending on what time you go, I find the section from the Collingwood Children’s Farm to Clifton Hill can get busy with walkers, joggers and dogs. Also remember the Webb St steps that need navigating.

But I do like a Capital City Trail loop.

Another good extension is up the Merri Creek trail and down the Moonee Ponds trail (or vise versa) via the Western Ring Rd path.

I did the capital loop on my fixie a while back. Really enjoyed it. Best thing was its not too steep so is not too taxing on the front rim brake/rear fixed hub operator.
