I have bought so-called "marine grade" stainless items (marine grade is usually 316 or better) and found them to be magnetic
.Austenitic stainless steel (304 & 316 are the two most common versions) is NOT magnetic
There are plenty of grades of ferritic stainless steel that is magnetic (and is cheaper than austenitic stainless grades) and generally looks the same as 316 (ie. nice clean silver colour) but they are magnetic. Common household items like this are pots, pans, cutlery, kitchen knives, appliances etc. There are somewhat "stainless" but can be prone to discolouration that looks like rust spots - common on kitchen knives & cutlery.
Most "common" stainless bolts are probably not 316. Normally 304 or 316 stainless bolts (at least the larger sizes) have a marking on the head (S2 or S4 from distant memory) that indicates 304 or 316.
