Maldon Classic 2024

Postby P!N20 » Mon Jan 08, 2024 7:59 pm

Thought I'd start a new thread for the upcoming Maldon Classic on 2nd March.

Their website and Facebook page have been updated:

https://themaldonclassic.org/
https://www.facebook.com/people/Maldon- ... 690187364/

Only the bike display this time, although there is talk of a casual ride on the Sunday morning.

It was a great weekend in 2022.

Forgot to mention, those wanting to display a bike or ten will need to pre-register - $15 per bike. Registration will be open mid next week.

I’m a probable no show this time.
Big gravel ride in the Otways the weekend before plus a PITA court case the next week.
Shame cos I am keen to catch up with folks and a Sunday ride would be great. Hopefully not as windy as last time

I have no old bikes but live nearby and have that weekend off. Might ride the gravel bike out for a look

If you’re planning on attending dont forget to preregister at https://www.trybooking.com/COIGO

Registration closes Wednesday the 28th Feb or if sold out before.

The Sunday morning ride will be fun, about 50k’s around the lake with a stop in Newstead then back into Maldon.

This is on next Saturday!

I was talking with one of the organisers on the weekend and there will be some bikes on display with top level racing history. There are a few spots left if you have something you want to display.

Unfortunately life has conspired against me and I won't be able to attend, so if anyone goes can you please take lots of photos!

Interesting. Somebody back in December in Castlemaine spoke of a plan to host a ride from Maldon to Melville Caves, around 90km distant — and back (!) Far from a "casual ride", I kid you knot, that would test even the hardiest nimbles on flyweights, never mind about how easy it is to get lost! The final grinding climb up to the Caves is compensated somewhat by the 2km drop on leaving (but watch for the speed humps!! ) Having said that, it is a scenic route out into open Woop-Woop farming country; winds, the beating hot sun (even in March!) and erratic country drivers are a consideration. I can see no mention of this ride idea. Maybe Castlemaine Cycling Club (?) I last rode the route in 2009 on a Giant CRX-Zero (big mistake — clumsiest bike ever for a long-haul ride!! )

I have a weekender at Newstead (the family's ancestral home); have ridden the route Newstead-Maldon and Campbells Creek-Maldon hundreds of times since 1984, and subsequently as a resident of Castlemaine (1989-2002); the down ride from Maldon to Newstead is a fav-rav downhill (with distant views) for the first couple of kays before flattening out. The traffic is a problem — still! You'd be surprised how many city drivers are often caught unawares (and inconsiderate) of the presence of cyclists on these fast, open roads.

For mention: a must see if she is attending is Melbourne collector Charlie Farren, an avid long-time collector of bicycles from a century or more ago. Penny Farthings, Bone Shakers, Hobby Horses and all manner of wierd and wonderful two-wheeled (or four) contraptions from the earliest days of wheeled human-powered transport. Her collection (curated with late hubby Paul) is astounding.

Not related to this event. There is talk of a casual ride Sunday morning from Maldon to Newstead.

Charlie was at the 2022 Maldon Classic with some of her collection, there are a couple of photos here: viewtopic.php?t=105865

I haven't heard any mention of the Farren collection being at this year's event. Also worth noting is the book documenting the collection: https://www.abbotsfordcycles.com.au/pro ... ough-time/

Maldon to Newstead is a worthy ride; people who haven't done that run down before from Ye Olde Town speak enthusiastically of it.
Anybody can do it (kids have in past years, this and different events e.g. Maldon Easter Fair)
(Just hope for no strong crosswinds at Muckleford Meadows!!)
I assume it's a return ride?

Hopefully there will be room at The Dig for the sudden swarm of cyclists seeking a caffeine hit!

Keeping this topic alive, please note that there are some very significant bikes entered for this year’s show. A rare opportunity to see all these bikes in the same place at the same time. (A lot easier than tramping all over Victoria and NSW to view everyone’s individual collections!). Also a great opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts, and put faces to names, (and Real names to Faux internet persona’s). It was a great weekend last time, and it’s shaping up to be bigger and better this year. Hope to see you there!

So, did anybody take pictures of this event they want to share? Once again, I had business elsewhere on this weekend so I missed out again and I'm very interested to see what the meeting was like.
