Still felt like summer today, was so damn hot that I had to put the A/C on in the car.
And when I did that it didn’t work anyway.
Now it’s 9 pm in Queensland tonight (Enoggera 4051) and the temperature has just dropped from 24 degrees to 23 degrees. It’s gonna be an interesting bike ride in the morning…
* actually I don’t live in Queensland any more but the state border is just a line that was drawn on a map 160 years ago.

I just got home from having tea down the coast with the family and it was still 25.5 at 10.30.

Rained from Beenleigh to Fernvale, so I'm lucky that I got the yard mowed this morning and a couple of other things around the yard. If it's fine when I get up tomorrow, I'm going for a ride and then I have to start pushing myself for at least another 20 or so rides before June 1st, for the last meet on the old Chandler Velodrome. Comm Games from 82 were held there.

Current weather not half bad up here at the easternmost point of Australia - min 14 max 25.
There was a bucket load of rain right up the East Coast from the NSW/VIC border to North Qld a week ago.
After the overly hot and overly wet summer the landscape was oozing with mud and water.
And mossies and toads galore.
But a few days of dry sunny weather and in many places the mud is no more.
Fingers crossed.

A bit of rain here but not too bad. The gravel is getting better as some of the summer corrugations are graded out.

It's bloody shocking weather. It's currently 27c and a very slight breeze.

First ride this year with a long sleeve jacket and long sleeve undershirt, light full fingered gloves too. A lighter jacket but it's all downhill from here. I was comfortable but the heavier jackets are looking at me. Leg warmers haven't been on yet as I haven't dragged my carcass out early for a while. This was a midday ride. 22 years of shiftwork has reinforced my aversion to early mornings.

A cool start on the bike at 10C but quickly rising to about 18. Riding with a good mate.
Not a breath of wind and a not a cloud in the sky.
Stunning views across the Gippsland Lakes and plentifully green paddocks and refreshed post-summer bush further inland.
This is the reason I ride a bike, and live where I do.

Up here this morning we started riding in Tumbulgum NSW 2484 where the overnight minimum was 15 degrees.
Which to us is cool enough to need arm warmers
But before you think that we’re a bit soft, remember that it’s only a month ago that we got our first overnight minimum below 20 degrees since the end of November last year !
After an abnormally wet summer and autumn everything up here is very green and a bit muddy (and many buildings are mouldy too)
Usually in early May a cold spell hits and the overnight minimum drops below 10 degrees for the first time in 9 months.
People barely cope with it because for most of the year it’s hot and humid - as long as you are within about 50 km of the coast.
Inland it’s a different story.
In Stanthorpe which is about 100 km inland (as the crow flies) it gets cold enough for snowfall.
But they haven’t had anything more than a token snowfall since 1984.

For its considerable surface area, around 60km north to south x 75km east to west, Port Phillip is quite shallow, mostly less than 20 metres, so its temperature fluctuates a fair bit throughout the year, dropping to about 12-13 deg. in winter and rising to 21-22 deg. in summer.
