Merida 905 com
Postby spliff » Wed Oct 14, 2009 9:47 pm
Hey all i found a link where someone was asking about the merida and ms , from what i understand merida make there own frames and also use wheels suitable for people over 100 kg in weight where as a lot of wheels are only rated to 85 kg , they also make frames for felt no idea what the 2008 model 905 is like but after speaking to 1 of the larger specialist shops in melbourne they recommended the merida for the above reasons i will be looking at the 2010 merida scultura 905 com soon its round 3.5 k anyone with any info on this bike and other comparable cycles feel free to reply be interested to hear your thoughts

it's worth discussing the meaning of load ratings.
when many mechanical products are designed, they're rated for capacity or load. obviously for bikes, the weight of the rider is important. but it's not the only determinant of load. when you go over a pothole, the static weight of your body on, say the seatpost, is magnified. so an important factor is also how much of a beating the bike gets.
many parts are more prone to fatigue failure than ultimate strength. in that case, the amount of use the bike gets is a key determinant.
finally, any reasonable design will include a fair factor of safety. when they say "rated to 50 kg", they often mean 100.
if you consider all of these things, you'd appreciate that statements like "this bike is rated to 85 kg" are, on their own, fairly meaningless.

The wheels are such an interchangeable part I'd be reluctant to base my decision on whether to buy a bike solely on the wheels. A lot of shops will allow you to trade up/down anyway. The Merida uses the Shimano RS10 wheel afaik which is a 16/20 spoke configuration, which for a heavy rider with a lot of power may struggle. Maybe DT Swiss R 1900 (28/20) or Velocity Deep V (32). But I know plenty of 100kg+ riders using Mavic Aksiums without any issues.

I was close to buying a 909 (I think that’s the name) but decided that was a bit too much money to blow on a bike, anyway the bike was awesome! I did try a 905 at the same time and apart from lower grade carbon and about 1kg the bikes are very similar; responsive, excellent acceleration and well decked out with group sets/wheels etc. Merida makes Felt and Specialized frames and are the 2nd biggest bike maker in the world so the brand is pretty good. As for other bikes, work out your maximum budget then try as many bikes in that price range (take them for a decent ride, 30mins) and one will speak to you.

hey all thank you for your input so far very interesting , well as for rims on the 905 i count 28 spokes and says there Alex Road Aero 32-White-NC not rs10 with 20 spokes as someone mentioned prehaps those wheels are on a different model , the only cycles i have checked not riden so far are a giant defy 3 and defy 2 in 58 and 55 inch frame store owner reckoned i could get away with either but leant toward the 58 , from what i understand the difference between alloy and carbon ride is in mainly body fatigue and lower heart and respitory rates , i saw a scott cr1 on speshial but was told it may have a lot of flex , also a carbon Schwinn but nut much info so thinking to go with more reputable renowned brand at this stage
