'Repco' guess the... frame/ fork... weight?

Postby kukamunga » Thu Mar 13, 2008 5:11 pm

'Repco' guess the bare frame & fork combined weight? (originally from this thread)

Ok. So on the agenda in the next few days are to strip frame (not the paint  - just the components! ), clean it up, weigh frame and forks, study the Repco 'decals' and take some close up photos. Cool - I like pulling bike to bits! :)

My initial description of 'heavy steel road frame' is probably incorrect. The seat tube (28.8 ) and seat post sizes (26.2) I gave (assuming I measured correctly) give an idea that this aint a real heavyweight, and just look at those slender stays! 8) Richard is probably right in saying most of the weight is probably in the components. I'm punting on the frame being 2.6kg and forks 820gms (3.42kg) . Any others wish to take a guess (no 'Imperial' measurements please!)?

The closest to the combined weight of bare frame and forks (in kilograms [kg] to two decimal places) without going above the actual weight, 'wins' all the componentry pictured on the bike (including bottom bracket - what the hey!). Pick up Melbourne only.

But still post separate frame & fork weights for interest.

NB: Please. No duplicate total combined weights :? !

Official weigh-in at 12:00pm (EDST) this Saturday, March 15, at my local Australia Post

Ok. Competition closed. No more correspondence will be entered into.

The final list is

mikesbytes...........3.00kg (2.20kg/ 800g)
MountGower.........3.10kg (2.40kg/ 700g)
ukalipt..................3.30kg
531db...................3.45kg

Mulger bill.............3.82kg (2.98kg/ 840g)
basscadetz...........3.90kg
daacha.................4.05kg (3.20kg/ 805g)

And guess what? My local Australia Post Business Centre isn't open on Saturday mornings anymore! Will have to wait till Monday to do official weigh-in.

I can tell you though, weighed on my kitchen scales, the frame does weigh between 2.2 and 3.2kg (oh, duh!). And the forks? Hmmm..... well, the six of you all guessed well under the weight. Does this mean the frame is a bit hefty as well? We'll have to wait and see.....

PS: All the componentry off it weighs ~4.85g, and headset and BB (British/ ISO) are in reasonable nick :)

Just recapping from this thread.....
ukalipt wrote:.....maybe it isn't a repco?.....possibly someone at a later stage in the bikes life added the repco decals.
kukamunga, does the type look as though it has been hand painted on?
i am so not an expert but most bikes i have seen with hand painted decals have rarely had a full slab san serif font. it does seem like a very weird mix graphically to have
such fine pin striping with a full slab almost "plastered" over the top.....
stevendavid75 wrote:I am inclined to agree actually, I havent seen that font before either and looking at the photo looking down onto the down tube, it looks as if the REPCO has been painted later.
WyvernRH wrote:Looking again, this might be a pretty good idea. The head and seat tube transfers look VERY much like the "generic" transfers that bike shops could buy and apply to their creations, hand painting the shop details on the scrollwork etc. The hand applied paint tends to fade and vanish before the transfer disintegrates. I have a couple of bikes with the remains of this type of transfer as does Cludance I believe.
If this is so I wouldn't have thought a big company like Repco would have used generic transfers but have their own printed?.....

Well, the painted on 'Repco' is still there, bold and strong. But as for the decals, well, they appear to
have all but come off in the wash.....
Image DOH! :?
Frame possibly made in 1963? Image

Just started reading 'The Dancing Chain'. The Huret 'Svelto' derailleur was introduced in 1962/63, making this frame more than likely built in 1963.

So any more insights into the painted 'Repco' decal? When did Repco bikes first appear?
