Hi team, what do I do to this? I took the best pic I could to describe the overall condition.

It looks ok to me - I'd give it a liberal flush with Rock'n'Roll Gold, wipe off the excess, and ride...

Best way to clean the chain (for me and no doubt everyone has a different technique) is with some citrus cleaner and a toothbrush. I spray the cleaner on the chain on the bottom section of the chain stay so it will drip directly out on the ground (lawn as I clean the bike outside) then spin the crank a bit, spray and scrub again with the toothbrush until you have gone all around. Et into the cassette while you are at it and the jockey wheels on the RD as well. Then wash it all off and I dry the chain with a rag then let it air dry for a few hours or overnight then relube and voila . This should get you on your way for a much smoother gear change also

Plus one. Should take less than 5min. Would only go to greater measures if it is not moving freely. Cleaned plenty that look like that after a mud run on the MTB and only used Rock n Roll in the last couple of years.RonK wrote:It looks ok to me - I'd give it a liberal flush with Rock'n'Roll Gold, wipe off the excess, and ride...

Looks like a normal amount of gunk. Chains do pick up gunk.
I wash mine once a month by soaking it in kero, using toothbrush to clean it and then I let it dry. After this I too use Rock and Roll gold to lubricate and off we go. Since my bike is for commuting the chain and bike can get dirty so can do with a clean once a month.

+1 this is good advice, if you use rock and roll lube you'd probably be flat out needing a propper clean once a month.DavidS wrote:Looks like a normal amount of gunk. Chains do pick up gunk.

Meh, scrube the bejabbers out of it with kero and toothbrush, apply Purple Extreme. Ignore for 4-500 kms
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

+ 1 or otherwise degrease the chain and relube. Not a bit issue either way by the looks of it.RonK wrote:It looks ok to me - I'd give it a liberal flush with Rock'n'Roll Gold, wipe off the excess, and ride...
