For those who are interested enough to take the 3 measurements, but aren't interested enough to read the guide, Calculator.com has this online calculator which is based on the Navy's guide. The guide does say "This is only an estimate and the official BCA is determined once entered in PRIMS." (page 9, 3b). So it might be OK for a "ball park", or vague assessment.
[Edit: As this post may be useful to some, I've add it to the first post of this thread.]

Waist was probably 70.5, but I'll call it 71 as there is so much variability depending on how much tension is on the tape.
If my BMI seems a bit low - and it might get lower - I'm just getting ready for my future bout of Covid. Both eating well and staying lean have been shown to reduce the risk of serious symptoms.

I'm probably at the lightest and thinnest that any non-competitive cyclist (or normal male) of my build (light to medium) wants to be. At least 5 kg lighter than I was as a full height teenager. Probably a good point to reduce or stop the weight loss. It's going to take some monitoring to make sure I don't regain too much.

Still losing. Which is not what I was aiming for.
Being carful about adding more food, as weight can add up quickly. I really want to stabilise at what is considered as the lowest healthy BMI for a man. According to this study I'm close as it says the minimum healthy BMI is 19.5 for men and 18 for women.

So I'm finally gaining again. But the rate is slow, so easier to control. I'll see if I can hover between 56 and 57 kg for a few months.
Covid is the main reason why I'm trying to keep my body weight low. Incidentally, Covid visited my work early this week. A temp security guard was tested for Covid, but came to work before getting the result. The result came back positive. So now we are working from home when possible and waiting for the specialist cleaners. Although I'd been in the same areas as the guard since, I got tested for Covid yesterday and the result was negative. Showing - like a least one study - that it's not easy to pick up Covid from surfaces.

Yesterday afternoon fully clothed:

Incidentally a colleague stepped on the scales that afternoon at work. He says he's mainly plant-based and slightly shorter than me. He was more than 72 kg.

Thanks. They go OK, but the climbs I do here - although they are often what would be considered steep - are usually no more than 2 minutes. Going well or badly often has much to do with comparisons to others. Since I ride alone and don't even have a bike computer, I can't tell.
I haven't been out on the bike this week due to the persistent rain. Thought I'd gain weight, but it made no difference. Which goes to show that for some people like myself, weight management is almost all about diet and little about exercise. Since generally I eat the same amount regardless of the amount of exercise. Obviously there are people on these forums who have had significant results by doing the opposite.

Fair enough. I expect givennyour low weight it would be pretty good if you spent a bit of time on the bike.Nobody wrote: ↑Sat Dec 11, 2021 12:49 pm

I know that is not what your diet is about however.
My weight does vary a bit with mileage. I don't pay anywhere near the attention to it you do.Nobody wrote: ↑Sat Dec 11, 2021 12:49 pmI haven't been out on the bike this week due to the persistent rain. Yes I agree diet appears easily the most important factor for weight management.

For those who aren't regular readers of this thread - almost everyone else - it's because at least one study has shown that the lighter one is, the less likely that person is going to get serious symptoms from Covid.

Waist is the same, so the little bit of weight loss is probably due to a bit of dehydration from a walk yesterday evening. Still on track to keep within a 56 to 57 kg weight window (BMI 18.9 - 19.3).

Just 3 days of instinctive/intuitive eating with extra fruit pushed me closer to my upper limit of 57 kg. It's pretty clear why I can't use that style of eating to stay lean at my age. Suffice to say I won't be repeating it this week. I want to end this year within my goal range and preferably stay there next year.

This morning, before breakfast, sans clothes.
56.3 kg
(BMI 19.0)
Waist 71 cm
(WHtR 0.41)
Going on my waist size I'm probably about 0.3 kg less than I usually would be. Probably a bit of dehydration from yesterday's ride.
Anyway so this year I've lost about 5 kg and 3.5 cm from my waist. That's the difference between deliberately regulating my intake and intuitive eating with similar food at 53 years old. And at a morning BMI of 20.8 in Feb, I wasn't that heavy. Even with a 3 kg addition for some food and basic summer clothing I was still within the ideal 20 - 22 BMI range. In broad terms, it's probably the different between being a dressed BMI of 22 in Feb and 20 now.
As to next year's goals. While Covid is still a threat I'd say more of the same. Keep myself as light as feasible to avoid severe symptoms from getting the disease. I think the next 2 years will be the years that most of us get the virus. They have to let the virus take its course eventually.
Looks like I'm the only one still using this thread to track weight and waist size. Sorry if I chased anyone away with posts in references to ideal body weight etc. But the truth on health versus body weight still needed to be told. Forums by nature can be elitist and yes I've been trying to encourage others to set some lower body weight goals. In hindsight maybe not the best approach. Athough forum traffic in general has been going down. Social media and other distractions are taking over it appears.

Keep it going. I find it interesting.
I weigh myself in the mornings normally after a 1.5 - 2 hour ride.
Height; 168cm
Weight; 58 - 60kg throughout the year. (60 at the end of the day)
Waist; 75cm Carrying a small amount of visible fat just above the hip/pelvis bone. About the size of a 23mm bike tyre rather than a car tyre.
I find my weight can vary + or - 2 kg, depending on hydration levels I think. Diet is mostly fruit, veg, nuts, wholemeal/grain bread, very limited cheese and fresh caught local fish (small 100-150 gram portions) 2 - 3 days/week.
All medico checks and figures (cholesterol, BP, glucose, iron/minerals, blood etc) within very healthy/normal range at 58 years old.

Thanks for the post and the encouragement Tim.Tim wrote:I'm still checking in from time to time.

So if we call the weight 59 kg, then that's a BMI of 20.9 kg/m^2 and your WHtR is 0.446. Not bad results. Especially considering your age. Similar to me at the beginning of the year.Tim wrote:I weigh myself in the mornings normally after a 1.5 - 2 hour ride.

Good to see another person with no chronic lifestyle illnesses in their 50s. Which - not surprisingly considering how most eat - is fairly rare. I need to get some blood tests done since I haven't done any general ones since the beginning of Covid. Checked my BP on the 17th Dec which averaged 89/62, so that's not a problem.Tim wrote:All medico checks and figures (cholesterol, BP, glucose, iron/minerals, blood etc) within very healthy/normal range at 58 years old.

Well since it has only been a day, not too much has changed. Went for a 1.5 hour walk yesterday, so looks like a bit more dehydration. I hope to be no lighter than this by the end of the year.

Posting again today because I wanted to get a more accurate baseline to start the year without the dehydration of exercise the day before.
This afternoon after about 3.5 kg of food eaten for the day, with 2.1 kg of clothing - (undies, socks, shorts, shirt, jumper, boots):
61.7 kg (clothes & boots inclusive)
(BMI 20.9)
Waist 75.5 cm
(WHtR 0.44)
The afternoon weight should be comparitive to the weighing style used in population studies. I know when my haemochomatosis specialist used to weigh me, it was clothes and shoes included. Just step on the scales as is. I think it was the same for my working at heights physical I did last year as well. I'll have to try to remember if I do it again early this year.

56.9 kg
(BMI 19.2)
Waist 71 cm
(WHtR 0.41)
My typical fully hydrated recent weight has been approximately 56.6 kg. It has now increased to 56.9 and I suspect it is going to go past my current upper goal weight of 57 kg in the next week. I won't get into the factors yet as I have too little information. But suffice to say that one is exercise and the other is diet related. So far my waist hasn't increased. Until it does, I won't implicate diet since waist is a reasonably good indicator of visceral fat, which I'm most concerned about. In the more distant past, my waist has led slightly in change to my weight change. So because waist hasn't increased yet, I'm hoping that diet isn't the contributing factor here. But if it is, I'm willing to adjust it.
Come to think of it, I really should have a goal waist size. So I'll set my current 71cm as an upper goal for now.

As you know I have been on the forum since 07 including my previous Parrott acct.
Yep the forum is way, way down on what it used to be. Traffic is a fraction of what it once was.
A pity it has been my favourite forum.
I think you are right, other forms of social media have taken over.
I did try Facebook a few years back.
It was too invasive and didn't let me search for what I wanted, it appeared.
Got rid of it off my phone.

So I'm now above my upper limit for waist and have hit my upper limit for weight. So I'll make some changes over the next week to see if I can get back in range after 2 weeks.

Waist is still going up as expected, but weight is strangely down. It's going to take a further week to fix as I'd already bought the food I needed to avoid. So by next week I hope to have halted the waist increase.
With trial and error, we fail our way to success as we live and learn.
