2019 Cycling Fatalities

Sadly, it is time to start the 2019 version of this thread.

A hit-run on the Princes Highway between Meningie and Kingston SE. I've driven the road quite a few times, and seen many cyclists. The road is not busy so there is no excuse like being unable to move over to pass.

Ride'n'Rest In Peace and condolences to his family and friends.

Hit and run driver had been arrested and charged according to SA Police news.

About 5pm, Thursday 17 January, a 37-year-old Mount Gambier who had allegedly been the driver of a truck at the time of the collision was identified in Naracoorte and arrested.

He has been charged with cause death by dangerous driving, two counts of drive without due care and leaving the scene of an accident, he was refused bail and will appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court tomorrow, Friday 18 January.

My deepest sympathies to the cyclist's family and friends. I rode through there this morning probably only minutes before the collision but took the service road off the highway.

This from the Police Inspector at the scene sums up the attitude I see on the road everyday:

"Inspector Green expressed frustration at the impatience of some motorists caught in traffic queues.

"We had people in traffic yelling out obscenities due to the road being blocked, and that's really, really sad when it was very clear there was a collision."

"It might be a good idea for all of us to rethink how we treat each other on the road and be a little more courteous.""

Updated to report a 16-year cyclist has died..

A teenage boy is dead after colliding with a truck in western Victoria.

The 16-year-old rider died at the scene on the Princes Highway near Warrnambool about 4.30pm on Thursday.

Police updated the age for the cyclist who had first been reported as an adult in his 20s.

A man driving the truck, aged in his 60s, and another driver in a second vehicle who took "evasive action" to avoid the crash, were both taken to hospital, police said.

The crash happened where Ziegler Parade merges with Princes Highway in the westbound direction. The speed limit there is 100. The article says the young cyclist was heading east and trying to cross Princes Highway there (crossing north to south as best I can make out).

As far as I can tell from the map, access to the town (effectively an outer suburb of Warrnambool) is designed to be pretty well impossible except by car.

Yep 4 dead in Vic so far on roads. At the end of the report we get.
"Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage of the collisions to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

The other day in response to a video I sent in, the officer phoned up and said... "I put my most experienced officer on it and he gave the driver a warning."

I said "interesting how when you get a video of a near fatality..... mine....driver gets a warning. Yet when people die, you want dash cam video of the event."

Police answer ..... "We don't entertain those sort of questions." that folks is a "go with god but go" answer...I went.

Another cyclist has been killed by a truck and dog. RIP and my condolences to family and friends.

A cyclist has died after being hit by a truck at Newcastle this morning.

Just before 9.30am (Wednesday 20 March 2019), emergency services were called to the intersection of King and Perkins streets, Newcastle East, after a cyclist and a truck collided.

The cyclist, a woman, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, she died at the scene.

She has not been formally identified.

The truck driver was uninjured and taken to the Mater Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Sad to hear...RIP to the lady rider

Those truck n dog trucks are just too damn big for the confines of the areas in which they operate, there's a lot of construction going on in and around Newcastle City with apartments and stuff being constructed and building being demolished to make way for them...it's been ongoing since the pulling out of the heavy rail in the CBD of Newcastle.
Perkins st which goes one way towards Hunter street is pretty much a steep down hill and King Street is up and down at the Perkins street end of town then is very flat after Brown street. The report doesn't give much info so it doesn't tell which way each was travelling.

A report I heard on radio said the truck was turning left so the cyclist was left hooked.

Yes,it was.
From Newcastle Herald

Newcastle police Chief Inspector Gerard Lawson said the cyclist died at the scene.

He said initial inquiries indicated the truck was turning left from King Street into Perkins Street when the incident occurred, with the cyclist ending up underneath the truck, suffering "significant internal injuries".

I have a place on Military Rd in Sydney (very busy) whenever I hear a horn and a revving motor it pretty much invariably turns out to be an aggressive hoon driving a truck with a dog trailer. Those things are dangerous enough without having hoons driving them.

I can't find anything on the usual places I'd expect to (ABC site, WA police site, The Western Australian); or in fact any WA road deaths at all. So hopefully you misheard.
