What are some of your “typical” utility rides?

Postby Pax » Mon Jun 10, 2019 9:52 pm

What are some of the typical Utility or cargo rides we do???

One of mine typical rides happens 3 times a week: my “multi-modal commute” to work with my Brompton. Its definitely utility riding, because it’s primarily for transport (avoiding using the car), I take it easy so I don’t get sweaty and can just ride in my normal work clothes, but its a great start and finish to the work day.

Its 4k to the bus stop,

then 25k by bus to the train, then train to Brisbane,

then back onto the Brompton for the final km and a bit to the office.

then the reverse in the afternoon.

Nah, the bike is claiming the fifth. Image

But if commuting and shopping count, all my rides are utility rides.

They count as utility riding but of course there is a Commuter-specific subforum for Commuting specific conversations
Shopping absolutely counts...if the load gets big enough it counts as cargo cycling...not that we want to get pedantic :P

A very typical ride for for me is with Trace and the dog to the local off-leash beach.

Can’t complain too much :-)

There are substantial savings in just having the one car in the family. And Perth has great conditions for riders, though the Freo Dioctor can be a bit of a drag for some.

For the last eight years of my working life I commuted by unicycle every working day come rain or shine for all but but four days. It was mostly the full substantial distance one or both ways.

While in retirement most of my riding is recreational, I still do errands and move around the CBD (where I now live) almost entirely on the unicycle. This morning, with all the time in the world that retirement affords me, I rode the eighteen kms thru the drizzle to my medical appointment and half of the way back.

A great utilitarian enhancement to the unicycle is the lack of restrictions on trains and buses.

I intend to ride for "utility"until the body says otherwise. And stretch out the superannuation while I am at it.
