Surprised that without a rack there's huge stable front bag capacity with more to go if I got a sturdy hemp bag to suit (or just a Hessian bag easier and lower profile than it would be racking on other cargo capable bikes I've got.

I've used a trailer with one bag if I do more than one shop. More often if it's Bunnings am going to for instance, its' only there I go.

Admittedly I don't leave stuff in the open as such. It's in a closed pannier or the zipped trailer bag or at least in an opaque bag strapped to a rack. If I've been to Bunnings and I have something awkwardish then it is usually strapped to the bike so nicking it requires a fair amount of undoing.
The key I think is that people tell themselves they are entitled to something before they take it. "it was just lying there" . If they have to open a bag or unstrap something then it is very clearly theft and self-acknowledged thieves are few. If you leave your stuff in a high traffic area where a lot of people go who are thieves then you might get it nicked but at your average shopping street I don't think so if it means breaking into something.
A lot also depends on what the thing is. Your grocery shopping is probably safe unless someone really does need it more than you do. Your small expensive easy to sell or pawn thing well that's probably going to tempt more people but they have to know it is there. THe number of people who will rifle through something on the off chance is small and generally you have to be where more such people are to have one see your gear.
When I was just using bike and pannier to shop I would leave bike with pannier fairly obviously full of shopping (as the celery tended to stick out the top) locked to a post while I went off to get other stuff. In several years of doing that I never lost a thing, not even the rear light clipped to the seat bag. If I took the bike to the CBD and parked it (often did that for training courses) I would use a lock and cable to lock the seatbag closed and to the bike with the light inside it because the chances of something being nicked from a bike sitting there for hours was higher than I was comfortable with.

Yes, its a thing to think about, but I've never had anything stolen to date. I tend to plan my trip so as to not have anything valuable sitting in the bike while I go into other shops.Wixxy wrote:For the OP, as you cant carry in your shopping at each shop are you concerned stuff may go missing when you come out?

When I do leave stuff on the bike, I try to park within sight of the shop entrance in the hope it makes people think twice before they'd grab anything, and only leave stuff on the bike that is strapped in so its not a quick snatch and grab.
If its easy to snatch and grab, its also easy to just take into the ship with you, so its not a problem...I've been known to go INTO a shop with a pretty fully laden shopping trolley...flag my entry to the shopkeeper so they know I cam in with stuff, and its never been an issue.

Its amazing how simple it can be isn't it....don't always need special gear!eldavo wrote:Surprised that without a rack there's huge stable front bag capacity with more to go if I got a sturdy hemp bag to suit (or just a Hessian bag easier and lower profile than it would be racking on other cargo capable bikes I've got.

Naysayers: You Can’t Do THAT On A Bike!
1. Take your kids to school
2. Travel with a pet
4. Get your bike to the bike shop
5. No, but seriously, how will I fulfill my endless need for ever newer and larger furniture???
6. Move a ton of eggs
7. Transport every hat
8. Move … whatever these things are
9. Give the most epic Valentine’s Day gift ever
10. Haul away the last vestiges of car culture after society finally comes to its senses

The box floor is just wide enough for a carton, it's almost like they planned it this way

I like it.
Just checked it out on the Reid site.
I can see my wife possibly riding one.
How does it ride?

It rides better than I expected - was thinking it would be a bit of a barge, but it's responsive enough. The big tyres make for a smooth ride & the steering is responsive, even when loaded. The only time I notice the weight I have to go over a step or 3.
It was bought for my wife because she wanted an upright position, racks front & back & good torque. When she rides to work it's usually on 1 or 2, goes to 3 occasionally when she wants to make me suffer up a hill. Got a cheap pair of panniers but I will probably get some nice Ortleibs to make taking the groceries easier.
Even with a slab on the back the weight wasn't too high
I thought the 160mm brakes might be a bit small & I have the bits to take the front to 180mm, but so far they seem ok

Nice one, a colleague was test riding the Pedal version this weekend, not sure how he got on.
I wonder if the Tern 52l panniers would fit? They would make groceries very easy. I think they could be too short to reach the foot rails though.
