Best suburbs in Melbourne to cycle kids to school
Postby mcarans » Sat Jul 20, 2019 9:59 pm
What are suburbs of Melbourne with excellent primary schools where it is safe and convenient to cycle children to school (eg. on bike seat or in cargo bike)?

Too hard to generalise. From a cycling perspective inner north or south (City of Port Phillip) have good cycle path networks and drivers/residents used to it so it’s safe (a relative term) enough. The catch is where you live in relation to where the school is. More importantly, I have no idea what constitutes a “good” school in your POV, so cannot/will not comment on that. Best thing to do is look at areas of interest, research the schools then use google earth/street view to evaluate the transport options.

I gave this a lot of thought as well, and concur entirely with F&O on this as your criteria for what constitutes a 'good' school may be different to mine. That being said, living near one of the excellent bike paths would be a good start.
Campagnolo for show, SunTour for go

Thanks for replies so far. I am looking at public rather than private schools. By good school, I mean ones rated highly academically. I found these links for example:

Coburg. When we were choosing schools for my daughter we had four to choose from which were all within cycling distance for a 5yo.

Would you say that it was safe for your 5 year old to cycle? Are there bike lanes in Coburg?P!N20 wrote:Coburg. When we were choosing schools for my daughter we had four to choose from which were all within cycling distance for a 5yo.

Yeah there’s plenty of bike lanes, but we ride to school on the footpath.mcarans wrote:Would you say that it was safe for your 5 year old to cycle? Are there bike lanes in Coburg?
There’s also the Upfield bike path and O’hea St which are both separated bike paths (mostly.)
