I wonder if anybody has experience with Sunrace vs Shimano cassette durability?

In mtb world they are practicaly interchangable. But that's mtb where shifting is a dog once any dirt gets near it and wear is much higher also due to dirt.Tim wrote:The Sunrace cassettes interest me.

Sunrace cassettes
Jagwire cables
KMC chains
FWIW, Merlin and Wiggle will still send you Shimano stuff, though Wiggle stock levels seem to be getting worse and worse as time goes on, but I can understand opting for alternatives out of principal.

Sadly I don't think it will bother $himano, at least not in Oz - their focus has always been on OEM & a major reason for buying online is that half the time the parts I want aren't available in Oz.

I'll back what Calvin said, and add the Sunrace cassette is on track to at least equal the XT cassette that was there before it. 9,000km from the XT, 5,000km so far from Sunrace and shifting is still good, both cassettes had/have at least 60% of that on dusty trailsTim wrote:The Sunrace cassettes interest me.

Sure Hope etc are nice but I am looking to avoid price gouging.
No fancy requirements for my commuter - standard BSA & 24mm axle, I usually use deore, tiagra or whatever else is on sale. Price comparison - Tiagra RS500 from Germany ~$15, from pushy's with Australia tax $26 but not in stock!
Discs are 180mm again nothing fancy, centrelock or 6 bolt is fine, I think current is RT64, but again whatever is on sale.
Suggestions ?

I'm not really a believer in cassette/chain specs. I just go for whaterver is the right range and has an integrated cluster for the bigger gears to avoid chewing the freehub.MichaelB wrote:Any particular Sunrace cassettes? The level that is.

I've got a Sunrace CS-RX1 11-36 cassette on my gravel bike - works excellently with an R8000 medium cage rear derailleur. Cost $58 from Starbike in Germany.MichaelB wrote:Any particular Sunrace cassettes? The level that is.

For cassettes I bought some Miche cassettes a while ago, going very well on both bikes. See little point buying Shimano if they're going to screw us.

They do make a difference. Higher-spec chains & sprockets have better surface treatments which better resist corrosion, are harder-wearing and therefore more durable. With the same maintenance routine, a high-spec chain & cassette will considerably outlast lower grade models.

Maybe I don't ride enough, or maybe I don't do maintenance enough, maybe both?Duck! wrote: They do make a difference. How much of a difference do you think? I have a bush beater ebike that chews through 8 speed chains like mad, worthwhile to go for the top of range whipperman chains?
