NSW: More cycleways, streets to shut, footpaths widened

Not all footpaths widened, some are being used for car parking:

I’m not at all familiar with those streets or alleyways or whatever type of “thoroughfare” they are.

But legitimising parking on the footpath with painted parking bays looks like a bonkers “solution” to whatever the problem is.

Inner west clowncil has always been pro motorist - while there have been a varying number of "green" councilors, they are more concerned with social issues than with the environment.

Lots of houses in the area were built pre motor vehicles & have off street parking.

The next door Canada Bay Council doesn't paint formal bays, but turns a blind eye to it as well

Old 'arold "forced" council rangers to fine residents up around Bilgola (from memory) years ago for doing same. Much hue and cry about the injustice of it, in the local rag!

I haven’t checked the plans but really wonder if it will go the entire length of Parramatta Road.

If it did, that would give scope for a direct shared path all the way from Granville/Parramatta into the CBD.

The only way to solve it is to have a complete executive and management "realignment" with new senior people who have different priorities.

Until then nothing will change.

The NSW budget is pathetic. Making it feasible for more to cycle would reduce congestion, so those who choose to drive will find the roads less crowded

Some of the “infrastructure” is lousy as well.

Look at Old Windsor Rd shared path - bumpy, in places narrow and with some dangerous parts. Hairpin bend that is extremely tight with no visibility for anyone coming the opposite direction.

Or at the big intersection with Abbott Rd where you cross two lots of lights then have a ridiculous tight, narrow section right beside heavy traffic, bollards blocking half the pathway and on the left side a deep drop away onto uneven dirt and rocks.

Whoever thought that was great design?

People end up doing dirt riding to avoid the tight narrow section beside the road. and then have to jump up over a steep rise from the dirt onto the path.

Meanwhile the buses zoom overhead on a lovely straight, fast bridge avoiding all the stops and starts.

Why they didn’t put a cycleway on the same section as the buses (making it slightly wider) I’ll never know. It would save heaps of time.

Through Westmead a better effort was made with separated cycling and walking paths. Result? Pedestrians walk on the cycling path instead and leave their dedicated path unused.
