QUESTIONS: Replacing rear MTB wheel

Hey,

I had a problem with my original back wheel and I have exhausted all the reasonable possibilities for repair and now I am aiming to replace the back wheel and cassette.

This is the first time I will be completely replacing a rear wheel and I'd like to be sure of the details before I start buying things for it.

So, I will be buying that along with a lock ring removal tool for it. But I do not know what lock ring tool will fit.
Any help in finding a lock ring tool that will fit?

I'll also need a rear wheel replacement.
It will need to be a 29" wheel, that will fit the cassette, I would like it to be Shimano brand as well.
Can anyone provide any recommendations? (Something not too expensive would be suitable.)

A more complicated question:
I notice on the Shimano cassette lock ring that it has written on it 40nm. I assume this information is for a torque wrench.
Will I require a torque wrench to fit the cassette? (Seems to be a bit much to purchase one for a single use, but I might buy a torque wrench anyway because I will probably need one in the future.)
Do they make torque wrenches that will tighten to 40 nm and ones that will fit the lock ring tool?

Can you think about anything else I might need to get the job done? As I said, this will be my first time completely replacing a rear wheel.

What is wrong with the wheel? There are probably several different solutions available. Replace hub, spokes, freehub, or rim individually. Although swapping out a wheel is a lot quicker.

What rim/hub do you currently have. I’m guessing that with a 7spd cassette it’s not very high end, so anything that looks good should do.

You don’t have to have a torque wrench for the lock ring, just ‘really tight’ will do. I’ve never used a torque wrench for that job.

As mentioned above, what is wrong with wheel ? Also, what bike is it for ?

You will also need a chain whip to hold the cassette if you are removing the old one from the wheel. If you are just dumping the whole old wheel, then maybe not.

If it is just the cassette that needs replacing I found the job to be (unusually because often ends up being a bigger job than expected) quite easy, but obviously having the correct tools is a must - the old cassette locking ring was TIGHT.

A tool kit like this might get you through most home bike mechanic jobs. I bought a similar kit from Aldi which does most things - will not be the best quality, but has some specialised tools (like cassette removal & chain whip);

I don't think I used a torque wrench when I did my first cassette - just tight. I have since bought a torque wrench though. I bought a Tolendo 3/8" wrench as it seemed to have the range that covered most bike related jobs. The ¼" didn't go high enough and the ½" didn't go low enough. I got it from Supercheap on one of their sales and got the adapter set to go with it since I have both ¼" and ½" sockets and hex drivers, but no 3/8".

This wont be much help, but I ruined my mtb rear wheel (Stans) and found that front and rear was cheaper from UK than purchasing here.
Im now going through the whole process that you are going through.

The freewheel cassette is stuck on tightly, in my attempts to remove the freewheel I have destroyed a lock ring removal tool and rounded the inner metal on the freewheel cassette.
My bike is an Avanti Montari 1.
I'm VERY confident that the back wheel is for all practical considerations; non-repairable.

By hub, I assume you mean the part which the cassette screws on? I'm not too sure how to identify the what hub I have.
In regards to wheel size: I use 29 inch tires and 29 inch tubes. I assume I can identify the wheel size from that information.

I'm still somewhat unsure of what to buy. At least I have identified the exact cassette to replace. I'm still unsure of which wheel/hub to buy. If there's any more help that anyone can provide, especially pinpointing a suitable wheel replacement, it would be appreciated.

The whole bike is officially un-repairable.
The section on the bike that supports the derailleur hanger snapped off today.
