Variations to the National Trail through Vic/NSW Alps

I am planning on riding the National Trail early next year.
I am after detours/variations that are more worthwhile than just following the the trail ie better riding and views, especially through the high country.

A lot of the NSW section of the alpine walking track is very rideable as it is mostly on management only vehicle tracks
