2024 <10,000 km Club

Postby grt046 » Tue Jan 02, 2024 3:12 pm

I noticed the 10000+ km Club is away for 2024 so thought I would kick this off.

While still off the bike at the moment hope to be back pedalling around mid January.
I am in for 8,300 km and 52,000 elevation plus a few local climbs, Mt Nebo, Mt Coot-tha, Mt Mee and Clear Mountain as goals for 2024.

I'll go with 4000kms as a target again this year. Kicked things off with 42kms today.

2023 - Goal 4000km, completed 4003km (bloody overachiever).

2024 Goal 4000km (again), stretch target 5000km.

YTD 63km
I really should take up cycling!

Hmmm
I have looked at where I got to in years past. It's a picture of steep decline for the last 3. Now, since I want to lose 10Kg but no give up cake, grog or smokes the record indicates that I need to ride 6000 km this year.
And avoid climbing whenever possible. Hell, I'm 66, and if I don't want to I don't have to.
We'll see how we go.

Week 1 down with 165km.

Let's hope I can keep the motivation up for another 51 weeks.

2024 goal is 8000km.

Hmm, will end work on 1 March so no more commuting means less KMs.

So I'll go for 5,000 this year. I reckon I can do that with rides during the week while not working.

Can't you just do an out and back loop in "commute" mode with all the commute gear and pretend you are commuting? :?: Then you can get same kilometres as before if that's what you want.

Slow start for me - twinged a hamstring playing cricket on Saturday so have had a few days off the bike. Should be ok tomorrow to test it with a gentle spin on my commute, which is only 11kms and almost dead flat.

Off to a good start up until last week - Monday and Tuesday rides were cancelled due to rain, got a ride in last night to bring me up to 370km for the YTD however I am away for a week now and may have to get a couple of rides in before the end of the month to keep the momentum and hopefully crack 500km for Jan.

Worst start of the year ever for me with zero rides for January.
Doc has given me a clearance to start easy recovery rides this week after 3 months off the bike so hopefully Feb is better.

I'm aiming for 5k this year. I had a bad start to the year. Went for a ride on the 1st January, then had to have 19 days off due to minor surgery on my leg. Back on the bike for a few rides, but only racked up 180km for January so far. Will hopefully be increasing output for the next few months.

A fairly good start with 719km for January.
40km ahead of schedule. Only 7281 to go. :D
Not too bad considering the number of rainy days.

Managed to get rolling again this morning after 3 months off the bike for medical reasons.

28km loop to Newport return (Redcliffe Peninsula) with an early start. It is great to be back and the roads were nice and clean after all the rain over the last 3 days.

After my ride home from work later today I'll be at 212km, which isn't too bad considering I lost a week due to rain and another due to a hamstring strain playing cricket.

No km goal this week. I have a very low bar goal of 1hr of "recreational" cycling per week. Last year almost all my KMs were done commuting, so I want to actually just get out on the bike for fun.

I also want that hour to mainly be MTB as I just upgraded from a hardtail to dual suspension.

Trying to get up the KMs before I end work, so good January for me: 584KMs, less than 4.5K left to go for the year.

I'm finding the weather pretty putrid at the moment. Have been meaning to ride after work this week, but the temp is still rising to mid 30's and it is easy to find an excuse not to go!

Much better start to Feb for me with a 48km roll around the Redcliffe Peninsula. Nice sunny day for a change.
DavidS ..... I would have thought that retirement would provide better opportunity to ride just for enjoyment say 3 or 4 days a week. You certainly have the equipment (Ti and Campag just waiting)
I am coming up to 20 years in retirement and still loving it.

Sounds good, but the discipline of riding when not commuting, which has been >90% of my cycling for years, will have to be good. My plan is maybe 2 or 3 50KM rides each week. I can ride to Mordialloc and back on Beach Rd and that's about 45KMs, so just add a little.

Ti and Campag is wonderful to ride :D

Once you establish a habit it is easy and you miss it if for some reason you miss a week or so through illness or injury (I have just had 3 months off and really suffered)
My week is normally:
Monday ..... Golf 9 holes very non competitive with a group of mates
Tuesday ....... 40 - 50km early start and back home for breakfast (solo)
Thursday ....... 50 - 70km ride with group of mainly retirees (Sometimes 100km if preparing for a charity ride)
Saturday ....... 60 - 70 km Club Recreational Group ride
Sunday ..... occasional social easy paced 40 - 50km ride
I am lucky to live 10km from the coast (Redcliffe Peninsula) so lovely location to ride or head west a similar distance if it is hills that you want. Summer rides normally start at 0500 - 0600 ..... a little later in winter weather permitting as I am a dry weather rider.
