De-dorking Helmets

Postby ksteinhoff » Tue Dec 23, 2008 3:48 am

I know some of you don't like to look like lycra-clowns while touring,
so this may be something to pick up for the holidays: high-fashion
helmet covers.

A buddy sent me a link and I just had to see if there was something
that fit my style and personality.

No connection to the company. (Nor is it likely that there will be
any.)

You know, I just had a thought. Some American slang doesn't translate well Down Under.

Does "Dork" mean the same thing in both places?

Noun 1. dork - a dull stupid fatuous person
jerk
misfit - someone unable to adapt to their circumstances

OUCH! some of that hits way too close to home.

here it means "nerdy"...think "Steve Urkel"

there are some expressions that have VERY different meanings, but i wont be mentioning them for fear of getting banned :)

Hmmmm...?

Helmet with virtually zero ventilation.... not so cool!

Grippy fabric or fur :?: helmet cover.... not going to meet current Australian Standard for helmets, creates a head rotation hazard.

They may be an alternative for cautious riders in non-helmeted Europe, where the look fits with the general cycle wear. Unlikely to do much in Australia.

I can see where turning your head to check out the fur-wearing model might be a hazardous head rotation if a spouse or Significant Other was present to observe the swivel.

G'day

Does the cute girl come with the fur one? .... Perfect for winter :)

BTW one of them looks like a BMX style helmet.

I think the idea is that this

is the base helmet for this cover

You've got the concept. That's why I say that it would really look strange: It would resemble a regular hat, but it would have to be large enough to go OVER a helmet. You'd like like a person with a monster head from a distance.

I don't think helmets look dorky - well most of them - those ones that the BMXers wear that look kinda like a cheap placcky version of a WW2 german helmet look kinda silly.

But decent helmets generally look rather, erm, sporting, I guess.

What's wrong with looking like a human-alien love child?

I look at those hats designed as covers, and I think "Well, de-dorking the helmet will be easy: just take the hat off it!" :)

Does "Dork" mean the same thing in both places?

For the most part, a dork is indeed a nerd, but "dorking" has a whole different connotation, at least over here in Western Australia. I've heard the word used as a synonym for wanking, and the word "dorker" used in the same manner. It's sometimes applied to one of our local footy teams, The Dockers (substituted as "The Dorkers") when people are S***-stirring their mates.

Cheers,
Graeme

There is a company called NutCaseselling these in a bid to attract more people to wear helmets

I like the idea of 'humanising' the cyclist rather than the faceless roadie/mtber in front of your car

Just an update: I had lunch with Mary last week. Her problems with double vision have mostly cleared up with the help of some glasses with prisms that tend to realign everything.

Unfortunately, she still has bouts of vertigo that keeps her off the bike.

I really miss her out on the road. It's rare that you run across someone who rides the same speed you do and has the same riding philosophy.

We'll let some more time go by and then I might encourage her to look at bent trikes. That way balance may not be as critical.

I'd welcome feedback from anyone who has encountered this problem.

I have images in my mind of the Aussie Rules players with head protection going for a more fashionable alternative.

I wonder if one of those funky hats will fit on top of my yellow Stackhat?
