G'day
The 2009 Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma is on again this year, taking place on Sunday March 22, 2009. As with last year, there are three distances: 10 km family ride; 30 km ride through the tunnel and for those up for a challenge, the 60 km ride from Kwinana train station through to Joondalup
Registration is will be available online soon, with the costs for online registration for adults being $25 - 10 km; $35 - 30 km and $60 - 60 km. There are reduced costs for children and families. Details on the Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma website.
In 2008 I completed the 60 km on my 2007 Giant CRX 1 in two hours and seven minutes at an average of 27.7 km/h and rode back to Fremantle. This year I will be looking at riding from Fremantle to the start and then back again from Joondalup as well as looking to complete the ride under two hours and of course on my 2008 Look 555 and of course be faster than Graeme and to try and match or beat Jason
Regards
Andrew

I'm not sure I'll do it this year, after seeing a few crashes last year. The behaviour of some riders scared me a little. If I do sign up, it will be to ride with a few other 'bent riders in a 'bent paceline.
Andrew, tack onto a fast group and you'll easily beat 2 hours. I did it in 90 minutes last year - the group I rode with was the first large bunch of the A Group riders to finish.
Cheers,
Graeme

Even if you have trouble keeping up with one group there will be another only 10s of seconds behind going a slightly slower pace
It's still amazing that with 3 lanes of super smooth straight highway we can still have accidents as people do silly things.
Roller: last year the start was pretty early (7!?) and special train services were running to get people there. Problem was the trains were 100% packed by the time they got south of the river. I ended up having to hammer it to the starting line only to get there just as group A was let off... This year I will plan to ride down and give myself enough time.

I hope you do ride Graeme ...
I will be looking at a B or A start this year for sure.

yeah i heard about the special trains, if it starts at 7 at kwinana, then i guess i'll have to get up the same time as i did for the GBR.
one thing that bugs me about this ride is getting home.
the ride along the freeway bike paths sucks.
can anyone suggest a better way home to perth city from joondalup?

Last year we did a leisurely ride along the coast and ducked inland somewhere near City Beach.

I would agree with Graemae, as long as there is no Freo Docotor it is a very nice ride indeed. While you can turn to the city earlier, the coastal ride intersects the city to the beach bike path as well.
I ride this way (coastal to Freo) a few days week, but I stick to the road now. Way to much ped traffic for me along the Hillary's to Scarborough section.

thanks for that - so just head to the coast from joondalup & then ride down?
(i'm presuming there's a cycle path?)

There is a path all the way to freo I believe. Certainly the path to city beach is nice, but full of people usually. If you head down either Shenton ave or hodges drive from joondalup you won't miss it. It's my usual ride so I know to watch our for glass near the mullaloo pub
Moo...
To ride or not to ride? There is no question.

I currently have 7 yes votes from people at work so it looks like we'll be entering a team for the 60km ride. (5 of the replies are from known commuting cyclists so I think they'll stick to their word.)
Initial plans is that we'll ride as a group (pace of the slowest rider) and then we'll do a mad dash for glory from Greenwood Station!
Cheers,
Gary

Hi
From Joondalup to the coast, along Hodges Drive, there is no path IIRC for most of it, but there is a bike lane. Moo or Gary might have more details.
At the coast, where you turn left at the roundabout there is again no path, but there is one from the Boat Harbour (just down the road) or go a bit further and a path goes off to the right to the coast. From there through to City Beach is path of mixed quality. I think then at City Beach you can pick up the City to Sea PSP and that is a path. This linktakes you to the information on the coastal rides.

Coast road but it is longer.
Also keep in mind the freeway ride home is not all share path either.

At work, we currently have a team of 4 for the 30km event and 11 for the 60km event.
I've been using whatever tactics necessary to get people to commit!
Cheers,
Gary

I've ridden up (and down) the coast from Joondalup to the city a couple of times. It's a really nice ride. My advice is bypass the city and keep going til you get to Cottesloe. Should be warm enough for a swim and a beer
If you're shattered after all that riding the train station isn't too far away, either.
