Yeah. It's a genuine 1984 LA Olympic team bike... even has the original steel belted radial tyres...
was so bad that i was mesmerised by his low spec talk. ... shifters on the bars, joytec quick release.... no crashes...
i guess i started to wonder if there was a god....
havent seen an ad like that ... and $4K negotiable ..... :D
In that silver colour frame there was a 1984 Malvern Star that came out with "LA84" in light blue block letters about 3/4" high on the top tube a few inches forward of the seat. If it is that model, and it had a couple of zeroes knocked off, it would be a good starting bid on ebay....

Eh, might still be worth watching for the parts.
I like stating the obvious: That ain't 531. The bike is a kerbside find. The seller has over-capitalised and wants to recoup his losses. Run away. Don't look back.

The text in the ad makes me wonder who Charlie Goustoff was and why did he work in a Taiwanese sweat shop?

i beg to differ. it could well be a 531 frame that charlie geissauf built. certainly knackered now tho.

It certainly isn't a road racing frame for starters, so I'd be sceptical about anything that is claimed about it. Reynolds 531 does seem to be a little more rust prone than 4130 Cr-Mo or Tange, so I'd say 'maybe' just because of the crazy rust holes.
Anyhoo, scrap metal is scrap metal no matter what factory it came out of. :|

I have a 63x58cm one of these. Suntour Cyclone gen 1 derailleurs, TA Pro Vis 5 cranks, and Weinmann 999 centre pulls are all there, can't tell about the GB bars and stem but probably. Nice buy for someone.

*edit* also, Reynolds 531 steel.

This Discovery Channel team bike may seem overpriced at first, but don't be fooled - that includes the 'full team kit' - jersey, knicks, shoes, 6 months worth of EPO and 30 blood transfusion bags.

Now, (loosely) back to the topic.

I think what was considered 'overpriced' when this thread was started (2009) would now be considered the norm - there is a much stronger appreciation for solid steel frames with their tire clearance, better durability and good looks to boot than there has been since the cycling world 'moved on' in the mid 90s. I think that we probably owe more to the sW33t F1Xi3 cR@z3 that drove the 'old junk price rise of '09' than we would like to admit, because for a while there, if you wanted to ride a steel bike with fender and tyre clearance, it was 'old junk' or nothing.
The move back to old steel has had a huge effect on the new bike market, nowadays brands like Kona, Surly, Salsa, Jamis, and many others are turning away from the 'new is better' b/s war (hydraulic rim brakes? Really? I thought you were cool, Sram) and offering a range of affordable production steel frames that are highly practical, and good looking. For the plebs, it's can only be a good thing that we can now find what we want in the new bike market.

I'll still ride overpriced old junk though.

Hells yeah. Someone pounce.
*edit*
Don't pounce...I'm going to see it in the flesh first... :D

If that was in Brissie it would be at my place already.

Me likey :WW2 BSA Folding Paratrooper Bike
Though I don't know how realistic the starting price is, as its originality seems a bit questionble. Looks to have just had a khaki green rattle can make-over over a lot of later bits.

Just went and picked up the twin sister for my son's girlfriend. Ron (the seller) had the 2 bikes made at the same time by Hillman, although the spec on the gear is much lower on the ladies' bike - so that'd make them fraternal rather than identical. The cranks are "Custom" for instance. It has a 650B wheelset, and he and his wife agreed she'd ridden it under 100km. I need to change all 4 sticky cables, and regrease all the bearings, maybe a new BB to avoid that job ever again. In perfect unscratched condition apart from a bit of rust on the rear reflector bracket. The cluster has a wide range of ratios but the 3 chainrings are very close in size - I haven't counted the teeth yet though.

Ron's bike is quite special - I'd have grabbed that in an instant if it were my size. Much too small though.

I've chatted to him about it and decided the same thing. Great bike.
Here is the reply I got from Ron RE: Size
The seat tube measures 51 cm. from the centre line of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat lug.
The top tube measures 57 cm. from the centre line of the seat tube to the centre line of the head tube.
The nose of the seat is at 13 cm. above the top tube in the photo.

and for no reason at all, i give you this
Once done with disturbing the peace and upsetting the traffic, these cycling fashionistas have the audacity to relax, laugh about the ruckus they’ve caused, perhaps re-live in detail their most recent old lady beatings, laugh some more, drink coffee and take up every last cafe leaving nowhere for other good citizens to sit, relax and enjoy life.

Retro mtb for me is pre 1991. Rigid forks, thumb shifters and cantilevers, U or roller cam brakes. Definitely no suspension, trigger shifters, v brakes or discs.
