BREAKING NEWS - Car Driver Deliberately Runs Cyclists Down

Postby Aushiker » Tue Feb 19, 2008 10:57 am

G'day

Just breaking on the radio now, but apparently in Iluka, WA, four cyclits where taken on by a car driver. Not sure of full details but from interview at the scene with one rider, a Gary Bell (not our Gary I hope!) the driver was hassling the riders as they rode in the bike lane (blowing horn etc).

At the lights two riders went to the right of the car and two to the left. I understand Gary tapped on the drivers window to ask what the hell the issue was.

When the lights turned green the driver drove forward, stopped, reversed into Gary and one other rider, then acceralted forward deliberately into the other two riders.

No one killed, one rider has been taken to hospital but was walking so hopefully not too serious.

Driver was a p-plater I believe.

Reminded me that there's a huge long thread on another forum, asking if the hand gun is a cyclist's best friend.

Serioulsy - this is a sad state of affairs - and this is the reason when I am riding and I get hassled/abused I let it lie.

This is pretty much the area I ride...like every day.

I'll be watching closely for any updates in the media on this one.

The drivers action is commonly known as assault.

And it doesn't matter what actions lead up to it, if the driver was unhappy with the actions of other road issues, they can go to police.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

Not me fortunately! My wife has just phoned me at work to let me know.

That's my regular route, my wife sees the 4(?) riders everyday when she's on the Marmion Ave school run to Currambine. (I think it may be the BikeForce Joondalup guys but I'm not certain.)

Cheers,

Gary

Hopefully they'll catch the arsehole... funny thing is the a impatient p plater came within centre metres of me yesterday afternoon whilst riding on a 50kph road which i was doing roughly 50 at the time only to stop at the roundabout just ahead of me. I tried to catch-up to give him a serve but he turned in the opposite direction before i got there.

I can recall a number of instances over the last few week with P platers cutting me off and not giving a wide enough clearance when passing.

I having nothing against P platers but i think they haven’t been educated enough of the dangers.

I mean people have to get it into perspective what’s more important, a few seconds or someone’s life ?

I had an incident with a P-plater last night.

Turning into my home street, he was sitting on my back wheel revving his V8 engine. I moved slightly right to make sure he didn't try to squeeze past and push me into the door zone by some parked cars, and that set him right off.

He was wanting to jump out of the car and start a fight. Kinda funny in a way - he was angry that I cost him time and held him up, yet he was prepared to sit and argue and try to start a fight right outside my home. Add to that there is a 40km/hr limit in my street, and I was doing about that having come down a hill before turning in.

Must be the done thing in the northern suburbs.

Just before Xmas a bunch of riders out of BikeForce Woodvale got taken out by a car as well.

They thought it was carelessness bordering on deliberate. The car slowed down and tried to get as close as possible to the bunch so they could abuse them then the hit a couple of riders and speed off.

Again it was a bunch of young blokes.

that's criminal assault, and should be treated as such, if not attempted murder. The law for bullying arsehole drivers is too lenient, in every state. I hope the injuries to these 4 are none too serious and impermanent.

Truly a despicable act.
I hope this moron spends some time in a padded cell or is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Just glad that there's no serious injuries involved. The consequences for the riders and the driver could have been a lot worse.

It's a pretty sad situation :(

I'm almost certain that bad drivers and bad cyclists (doesn't sound it in this situation - but in general) will always be around. The best we can do is:

- lobby for more safe dedicated bicycle lanes
- prosecute dangerous drivers / cyclists for breaking the rules
- awareness campaign that dispels the myths around bikes sharing the road. No doubt this "you don't pay road tax" and "ride on the footpath" crap only helps to fuel aggravation where these reasons aren't valid/relevant.
