While at LBS picking up repaired wheel a month ago, they told me they have lots of low end bikes but hard to get higher end models. So they checked to see if any Giant Defys coming in and said yes one due in middle of July. So put down deposit. Was surprised to get txt this afternoon saying my bike was ready. Called to check if it was true and it was so rushed over before closing and collected. Still need some setting up and some sunny weather!

There's plenty of other stuff to go through but I'm have with my score in the wheels hubs and rear. The Suntour rear is also a brand spanker so if anyone is interested let me know and I will let him know. :)

Nice haul!

I would say yes, that's a Healing. I have one with paint that is very similar.

Interesting old rear derailleur - a Cyclo Olympic possibly? With a matching BSA freehub by the look of it.

Also, be gentle cleaning up those blue hubs, the colour can fade away if you use an abrasive cleaner...

Yep.

There won't be anything abrasive used on them.

I thought I had a better close up of the gear but anyway... here's a picture of a Cyclo Super Olympic (same thing) running 3 speeds on a Bayliss freehub on my Claud Butler Buccaneer. For a single wheel design dating back to the 1940's it changes OK over a 14t-17t-21t set of cogs

It begins.

Single bar end setup with a SRAM 10s clicky TT lever as a bar end and some Tektro Campy-shape brake levers and interrupters. Tiagra RD will have to be replaced with a SRAM unit to work with the shifter, or maybe I run the front shifter as a friction 10s. Need to get a 38T or 40T narrow-wide chainring for the compact cranks. 32T big cog will give a good spread of ratios. 50% dogs dinner but 50% also dogs b*llocks.

Not pictured: the realisation that fitting somewhat more up to date cantilever brakes on the front is impossible due to the 60mm stud spacing. I think somewhere in the dark brain recesses I did know that would happen. Rear is fine, studs are far enough apart. That's OK. Some new Kool Stop pads in these holders will work a treat, I reckon.

While this probably counts as decreasingly retro, the frame is a 1991 model. Like plugging an RB26DETT into a Hakosuka GTR shell. Or something.

38T narrow wide chainring arrived. Gear range feels nicely wide. I will lift the bars a little. I think I need to get a stem mounted cable hanger stop to get the yoke up high where the Mafac cantilevers seem to want it. Will explore alternative cantilevers but not in a rush, these work with the new pads I bought. Some 32 or 35 tyres on a wider rim might go well, too.
