Just reloaded photos and a couple of new ones, because for some reason, they disappeared the URL link expired. :?

Going to have my old race bike on the road for next weekend. It won't be fully restored but will do for a few rides. :D

019 Chromolly tubing with TTT compitition bars, Sugino cranks, Shimano 600 brakes, Shimano 600 bar ends and running gear. Suntour Pro hubs to Ambrosio Gold rims.

It's a Rapallo by Robert Johnstone and Brett Richardson was his apprentice at the time. It was made in QLD at his Zillmere shop.

Leaving the office to get some lunch, I spotted a lady unlocking her Mercian just up the road.

Of course I had to stop and chat. Turns out she bought it new in the 70's! Paint looked pretty good considering, just a few scratches and chips from regular use.

I should have grabbed a photo.

Picked up this Motobecane (frameset only) a while ago and have now found enough bits in the parts bin to put it back on the road.

But only really intended for it to be a 2-speeder special purpose bike for the brilliant new Tweed Valley Railtrail, as it is pre-1980 rear hub spacing. (120 mm)

The rear wheel that I had available came off a single speed bike. The freewheel does not seem to be right with the 3/32 chain I put on her. Maybe it is a Track cog.
Anyway an old 5 speed Shimano freewheel (just) fits with a skerrick of clearance to the dropout.
So that will do for now.
I’ve gotta say it’s a lovely frame, though obviously shows it’s age with some rusty patina.

Based upon internet photos, I think that it is a 1978 or 79 model.

Very, very nice !
Love the frame colour scheme and the way you have matched the Crankset colour (black) with the colours of the stem and seatpost, and selected a nice colour handlebar tape. Cheers

I think I committed a crime against good taste by putting that style of bar tape (and the yellow electrical tape) on the black ITM handlebars.
So it has been removed and replaced with some Deda bar tape which is more comfortable and looks better.

The Motobecane Grand Touring is an interesting frame.
It’s a lightweight Vitus tubing.
According to the internet, it uses Suntour dropouts. The Lugwork and paint quality is very good, but no water bottle mounts !
Frame has plenty of room for 700x32 tyres but I doubt that 700x35 would fit.
By contrast, I have a similar size Shogun frame which I suspect is circa 1980.
It has slightly more space for tyres and slightly more laid back steerer angle. But the Shogun doesn’t steer as quickly and feels rather awkward riding out of the saddle.
I was concerned that the Motobecane might have strange French thread types in the BB.
But I was able to insert a fairly conventional old Japanese Cup & cone BB.
But only after being unable to fully screw in a 1990’s era Shimano sealed bottom bracket. :|

Thank you.

That's a pure coincidence as they were the only available parts, the only attempt at colour matching here is just cable housing. 8)

I've got a similar bike and would like to get shallow type bars like that, how do you specify and find those type of bars?

Super clean Mino.... what frame was it? Did you do all the buffing and polishing yourself?

Yes, did everything myself, cleaning polishing, wheel building etc. Unfortunately it was a decal-less frame, nothing super special, but quite nice (certainly not "gaspipe" )

My 1910 Tour de France tribute to Octave Lapiz who won that year, including a 356 km stage.

Built on a 1958 frame with parts from 1890s to 2022(aged) including a French bicycle tax plaque from 1910.
