Something related that's been annoying the bollocks out of me has been going on in Melbourne a while now. Young girl (uni age) was murdered a while back. International student, she was identified as an Isreali on the day. It took a few more days before the main media conceded she was a Palestinian (or as they put it, a Palestinian-Isreali). The killer was being sentenced this week, again she's an Isreali. That's not lazy journalism or a mistake. That is deliberate. Poor girl.

I think its more like anything against cars are treated with hostile, From USA, WSJ vs NYT. If traffic would be better but lose some car privilege (lane/parking). it always treated as a loss, although overall its a win,

What does the mode of transport have to do with it. If the guy had walked there, would he of been an pedestrian? What about driving, would he of been noted as a motorist?

So the smearing campaign has a very old history (Toronto, Canada)

the bit where the writer would prefer the kids to eat chips in front of TV rather than riding a bike with their parents is pretty chilling and has manifested today in our society

May 29, 1979. Christie Blatchford in the Star on cyclists, a "not especially clean" people. Cars should launch an equal rights campaign: car paths through parks. Militant cyclists must not be allowed to run rampant on our streets!

I committed N-1. As part of my current unemployed state I've been doing work around my home and have a rickety shed that is jammed packed. One of the things I'm going to toss is a 24" ladies bike that needs 2 new wheels to get it operational, or 72 new spokes, but even the cost of 72 spoke is way more than the bike is worth. I can just imagine a news item about how cyclists dump rubbish on the street, while its sitting there on the nature strip awaiting for council pickup, along with chairs, blinds etc.

I've also got some 700c wheels to go, I'll try to find a new home for those

Due to COVID-10, it appears we have a complete turnaround with bikes being actively encouraged. My question is whether this will continue once we have resumed a normal life. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-17/ ... g/12247870

But contrast with the other thread about end of trip facilities in office blocks being closed. I asked my building about the closure and they said it’s because of the govt rules. If so then the govt needs to get its priorities sorted.

An excellent piece on return to work and COVID bike lanes. It's only five minutes.

Continuing to see more positive articles about cycling. This article I think confuses the situation with the heading as it sounds like there has been a mass cutting of parking spots where in practice its 1% of parking spots. Overall its a good article.

A Queensland cyclist who was talking on the phone while riding a bike has been slapped with a $1000 fine for breaking the little-known road rule.

The 24-year-old was cycling in Ayr, south of Townsville, when police spotted her on May 19
.

.... because Ayr is a real melting pot of cycling scoff laws amongst its something like 8000 residents .... I'm sure it's got nothing to do with a provincial cop with a chip on his shoulder

It was always going to happen. When they update the open data stuff it will be interesting to see how many of these they are dishing out.

It's very much a case of being caught in the crossfire on this. They had to up the fines for drivers to try and stem the plague of distracted driving. When we got the 1m rule most of the penalties were equalized so this one too. Never mind the difference in harm, or how much easier it is to hide the offence in a car.

We asked BQ to fight this which of course they didn't do. However their IG no longer contains streams of hand held phone camera photos while riding.

How much is the fine in QLD for driving while talking on the phone?

It is $1000 for using a phone on a push bike, or in a coach carrying 50 people. Same crime, same potential for harm.
