Strange days indeed- when the headlines read that yet another rider has tested positive but it’s not drugs
Yep. Although Covid far from performance enhancing.

Sucks for Yates, dashes his TdF campaign for sure. TJV also withdrew from TdS as a precaution when some of the staff also tested psoitive.

Seems like winning the TdF (or any other race) is not only being in good shape, not stacking, but also not getting sick with Covid ....

Ol Nairo man allegedly popped for !!! spammer !!! presence on 2 stages, and so TdF results erased. !!! spammer !!! banned for use in comp, but not a doping violation for 1st offence. ...

CyclingNews: Nairo Quintana disqualified from Tour de France
The UCI confirmed that 120 dried blood samples were taken during the Tour as part of the !!! spammer !!! testing programme. While Quintana will suffer disqualification and a fine for his first infringement, a second would carry a penalty of a five-month ban and a third would carry a nine-month ban.
From Nairo :
“Today I have learned with surprise of the UCI’s announcement of an infraction for the use of !!! spammer !!!. I am totally unaware of the use of this substance, and I deny having used it in my career,” Quintana said in a statement posted to his Twitter account. “With my team of lawyers, we are exhausting all the processes for my defence"
“I also want to confirm that I will stay at the Vuelta, get on my bike and give the best of my ability for my team, for my country and for my supporters.”

Got it in one, same reason you can't mention the brand name of certain blue pills

Mod Says: I've replaced the url in the 2 posts above with a tiny url so people can read the articles.

Poor form i think, he could have still fought the charges, without spitting the dummy and leaving the team that was built around him in the lurch.
Doing the manly sea eagles, i think of it as.

Maybe he was quietly told by the team ?

At this stage unknown. I think he may have been told/suggested, as it’s not a good look for the team.

So someone who was taking 'substances' was excluded from a Haute Route event?

https://www.facebook.com/CyclingHauteRo ... %2CO%2CP-R

I know the top riders take this stuff very, very seriously - they are not slow, you get a lot of pro and semi-pro riders at the top... It's current pro riders, continental pro riders, or the very top A grade riders and some assorted cycling enthusiasts who are quick by virtue of riding in the mountains a lot.

I'm not putting any name or names until it gets more widely reported. Looks like there was an issue in a previous event (not Haute Route).

Fergus Grant must be tearing out his hair. He's usually pretty cool but I can imagine the rider involved would have got a hell of a blasting from Fergus. I'm not sure, but I suppose the rider will be arrested as well?

Could it be this guy? Missing a post-race doping control would be enough to get a rider sanctioned.

You might be on the money there. ;) (it's all hush-hush, whispers at the moment)

Reality is if you are quick on these events and right up the top end of the classifications you are likely going to face testing.

Another article: https://www.bikemagazine.com.br/2022/08 ... so-de-epo/

The riders up the top of these events are ridiculously fast - they fly, both uphill and downhill (especially downhill).

Yes, I was constantly amazed by how fast the elite guys were on the descents at events like the Mont 24hr where you'd see them pass you a couple of times over the course of the race. It especially used to stun me how quick they were flicking between the trees on the singletrack, especially as they usually had a semi-slick tyre at both ends.

How they didn't wash out or whack their bars on a tree I could never quite get my head around, especially in the wee hours of the morning before dawn, when the fatigue really hits you.

And then one wet 7-hour run by WSMTB at Wylde, the mud was so slippery and sticky I abandoned the first lap at the halfway point, as my Scalpel had doubled in weight from the mud ball that had completely enveloped my bottom bracket to the point where pedalling was impossible and my back tyre was locked solid.

As I walked back to the pits from the bailout point at the 6km mark at Wylde, I was overtaken by the elite leaders completing their lap in a train of 4 or 5, making constant little micro-corrections as their front tyres slipped about on the greasy clay surface.

That kind of concentration when they were at smashing it at their aerobic limit ... I have no idea how they do that. I pat myself on the back when I catch one or two front wheel slips a race and keep it off the deck, at which point I promptly dial it back because it scares the crap out of me. These guys were doing it every 10 or 15 metres down this chute and they weren't backing off at all.

Again…

On the topic of a previous exploit (sticky watts), I have a video of a rider using this kind of exploit in a normal ride. A series of constant sprints for a good 10 minutes.

And in real bike racing, Lopez was formally released from Astana due to links with the doping doc that they suspected before.

Awww, poor Miguel .... :(

https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/miguel ... cks-on-me/

I am somewhat heartened (although it will never be stamped out) that the attitude towards ex-dopers and those tainted (although we don't know the real details with MAL), is that MAL & NQ are examples of how they now struggle to even get signed by Pro-Conti squads, especially when there is the Relegation issue front and centre.

Mind you, Astana being 'holier than thou' with Vino still at the wheel is a great example of double standards, so a long way to go :?
